12 Summer Wardrobe Staples French Women Never Forget to Buy

French women: They like what they like. To clarify, they don't dedicate their wardrobes to new trends each season. I've found that particularly applies to their summer wardrobes. Whenever the weather warms up, stylish French women all seem to pull out a set of summer wardrobe staples that will never go out of style and can all be worn together. These supremely versatile items epitomize that effortless French-girl thing we all try our best to re-create.

Whether in Paris, the South of France, or some other warm location in the world, many French women have made this combination of 12 fashion items their summer capsule wardrobe, and you can too. But how? you ask. By scrolling down and seeing the 12 pieces in action and shopping my pick for each. À bientôt!

A little white top is the prettiest thing you can pair with jeans (and literally everything else) in the summer.

A denim miniskirt is an ideal alternative when it's just too hot for jeans, and it looks great with the little white tops we discussed earlier.

This swimsuit style looks glamorous enough for the French Riviera.

While not the only summer dress style French girls favor, wrap dresses of every length are certainly all over Instagram this time of year.

Espadrilles may seem like a bit of a French-girl cliché at this point, but they really do wear them constantly (especially with the aforementioned wrap dresses).

French women layer on minimal gold jewelry pieces year-round, but it's far more noticeable with a skin-baring summer wardrobe.

We agree that it's hard to say goodbye to jeans until fall, but a pair of wide-leg white jeans is a French-girl summer staple that you don't need to put on hiatus.

Ballet flats are another French-girl cliché, but there's a reason for that. There's simply no other flat style that's more delicate, subtler, or prettier.

When French girls want a little extra polish in the summer, they reach for a beige blazer (for obvious reasons).

The beauty of a slip skirt is that you can wear it on vacation or to work, with sneakers or heels, with a T-shirt or a blouse—you get the idea.

I have a hunch French girls won't mess with dad sneakers this summer. They tend to favor classic, timeless white sneakers that look good with everything.

A little straw bag is the perfect complement to everything else French girls wear in the summer.

I'm 55, a Former Nordstrom Buyer, & Know These 9 Summer Items Go With Everything

We’re always down for a bit of sartorial advice from Susie Wright—the 55-year-old former Nordstrom buyer, current stylist, and mastermind behind So Susie. And while age should have nothing to do with your style preferences, Wright’s style perspective over 50 is particularly intriguing given her long fashion career and experience over the years crafting well-rounded wardrobes for herself and her clients. Basically, she just knows what’s up.

Last month, we asked for her tips on the chicest pieces that pair well with jeans. Next, we thought there might be interest in the summer items she swears by. But we’re not talking about just any warm-weather pieces here. The staples Wright turns to are especially noteworthy because they’re all highly versatile and can be paired easily with other basics in her wardrobe.

With all that in mind, keep scrolling for a digest on the nine summer items Wright loves because they go with so much. You’ll also find a bit of visual and shopping inspiration if you’re interested in adding a piece or two into your rotation this season.

"A white shirtdress goes with every summer shoe you own. From sneakers to slide sandals to higher heels, this is a dress style you’ll enjoy all season long." — Wright

"One of the most versatile pieces to own in the summer is a denim shirt. Pair it with more denim for a cool double-denim look, throw it on over any sundress (fasten the first couple of buttons and tie it as the waist), or leave it open over a tighter tank top and scrunch up the sleeves." — Wright

"Whether you add new shorts, a skirt, or a pair of jeans, white denim will be your go-to piece for every summery top." — Wright

"Graphic tees are always a favorite and are perfect for summer. They’ll go with a breezy summer skirt, your favorite denim shorts, and of course with every single jean you own!" — Wright

"Not only are slide sandals super comfy, but they work with all outfits—dresses, jeans, shorts, and even beachwear. Find a neutral go-with-everything color, and you’ll wear them 24/7." — Wright

"Known for its versatility and comfort, a simple maxi dress can take you from running errands to a backyard barbecue to cocktails on the patio. If you’re chilly, throw on an oversize white shirt and tie it at the waist for a stylish way to stay warm on a cool summer night!" — Wright

"My clients thank me when I convince them to buy a smaller crossbody bag. It’s perfect for running around hands-free, and it feels good to only carry around the essentials. And, they are the finishing touch to every outfit." — Wright

"A great denim jacket is the year-round staple we can’t live without. Wear it over a summer dress with the sleeves casually rolled, or tie it around your waist." — Wright

"The two most popular summer accessories are a cute hat and stylish sunglasses for style and protection." — Wright
