CAT scans reveal how COVID-19 fills patients lungs with fluid

A specialist lung doctor in the US has shared CAT scan images that describe how COVID-19 threatens the respiratory system of patients by filling their lungs with fluid.

Dr Cedric "Jamie" Rutland, a pulmonary and critical care doctor from California, spoke to a Fox Nation report about what hospitals are dealing with inside the lungs of diagnosed cases.

As Dr Rutland explains, CAT scans of COVID-19 infected lungs show increasing levels of fluid that prevent patients from absorbing as much oxygen.

"The virus will enter through your trachea into your lung and it binds to a certain receptor," Dr Rutland told Fox Nation.

"Once it binds to that receptor, your immune system gets alarmed... so now you get all these cells that are going to rush to your lung.

"And when these cells rush to your lung, they start to fill your lung up with cells and fluid."

In seriously ill patients, Dr Rutland said the virus triggers such an overwhelming immune system response that the lungs become too full of cells to supply the body with an adequate amount of oxygen.

The result is patients become so short of breath they rely upon ventilators (which is essentially a mechanical set of lungs) to breathe.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the US has now surpassed the number of Americans killed in the Vietnam War, with 60,876 people dying from the disease.

More than a million confirmed cases have been marked in the US, making it the highest known nation on earth with prevalence of the disease.

The nation with the second highest number of confirmed cases is Spain, who have reported 236,899 confirmed cases.
