Summer can be a wonderful time for vacations, sunshine, and leisure because of the warmth, relaxation, and flexibility it brings. However, for other people, the summer months can cause some to feel overwhelmed or have loss of control.

Expectations of carefree living can place a lot of pressure on those suffering from melancholy or anxiety. Individuals must remember that they do not have to keep up with the Joneses in order to enjoy summer. The self-care ideas and practices listed below might help you maintain your mental health over the summer months.

1. Get Natural Vitamin D

Increase levels of serotonin and vitamin D, both of which are proven to improve mood, by getting exposure to natural sunlight.

Taking a few moments to stroll outside, smell the roses, feel the beach between your toes, and watch the sunset can bring a sense of serenity and well-being. Pick up a new outdoor hobby that allows you to spend 30 minutes in the sun.

2. Get Some Sleep

Just because school is out for the summer and your children have the freedom to stay up all hours of the night and sleep in does not mean they should. As parents, you should constantly strive to maintain a healthy and consistent sleep routine for yourselves and your children, regardless of how relaxed your work and school schedules have gotten.

5. Spend Time with Pets

Spending time with animals is another activity that enhances mental wellness and may be done both outside and inside. Rainy days may force you indoors, but this does not have to be a chore.

Wean Yourself Off Soda

If you're looking to achieve optimum health, soda pop has to go. For regular soda drinkers, this is a struggle because they're addicted to the sugar, caffeine and the satisfying fizz that comes with it. For most, going cold turkey seldom works, but weaning yourself off it will.

Start by gradually moving to a diet soda, such as root beer, that tastes almost like the regular version. Remember, diet soda isn't healthy either, but it can be used as a temporary stepping stone to completely eliminate soda and increase your water intake.

Consider a Supplement

When you eat a healthy diet, you'll get the vitamins, minerals and fiber your body needs. However, there are days it's not possible to get all the nutrients you need and a supplement can help fill the voids.

If you find yourself eating beef every other day or more, one small change you can make is to substitute it with chicken breast or fish. On the days you decide to eat red meat, choose a healthier cut such as ground beef that's 95 percent lean or steak with little visible fat.

Slowly Increase Fiber Intake

When you eat a diet high in fiber, you benefit from improved cholesterol levels and a healthy digestive system. Fiber prevents constipation and helps you maintain a proper weight. Increasing your fiber intake is a habit that you must implement gradually through small changes.

Too much fiber all at once will result in bloating and intestinal distress, so try adding a new fiber-rich item each week. Foods that are highest in fiber include oatmeal, beans, berries and broccoli.
