Alfa Romeo to run Kubica and Ilott in FP1 in Austria

Alfa Romeo reserves Robert Kubica and Callum Ilott will be entrusted with the Swiss outfit's C39 in the opening practice sessions of the Styrian and Austrian Grands Prix.

Kubica will kick off next week's double-header at the Red Bull Ring, replacing Kimi Raikkonen in the 60-minute Friday morning session.

"The team has made some big steps forward, especially lately, and you can sense the confidence in the whole squad," said Kubica whose previous FP1 outing with Alfa was at last month's Spanish Grand Prix.

"I know how important it is to keep the momentum going and I am ready to play my part to make sure the two weekends in Austria are as successful as they can be."

Ilott enjoyed his official baptism of fire with Alfa Romeo in F1 at Portimão in early May, and will therefore make his second FP1 appearance with the team at the Austrian Grand Prix.

"The second FP1 of my season will be a good chance to help the team and build on the good job we did together in Portugal earlier this year," said the Briton.

"Knowing the car and the team already will definitely help me get to work straight away and having the data from the first week of running means we will have a solid base to start with.

"I am looking forward to making the most of this opportunity as the team keeps getting stronger."

Alfa Romeo team boss Frédéric Vasseur praised the 22-year-old for his rapid integration with the Hinwil outfit.

"The way Callum has integrated with the team in a relatively short amount of time is remarkable, and to see him in the car with a solid set-up base from the previous week will be interesting," said Vasseur.

"He’s done a good job in Portugal and the data he provided us with was really useful, so we are looking forward to another productive session together."

Tsunoda hit with pitlane start after AT02 floor change

Yuki Tsunoda will start Sunday's French Grand Prix from the pitlane following a floor change on the Japanese driver's AlphaTauri AT02.

Tsunoda spun backwards into the barrier at the start of Saturday's qualifying session, a contact that ended the young charger's session on the spot.

AlphaTauri's subsequent assessment of the car's damage compelled the team to replace both the gearbox and the AT02's floor.

Although the transmission change was withing the element's limits, and therefore penalty free, the floor fitted to Tsunoda's car was of a different specification.

The replacement as well as changes to the AT02's rear suspension were approved by the FIA technical delegate but warranted a pit lane start due to the element's different specification.

Tsunoda's blunder on Saturday was the Japanese driver's third crash in qualifying and followed his off in Q3 last time out in Baku.

"It was my mistake today in qualifying and I want to apologise to the team," said the 21-year-old. "I just used too much of the yellow kerb at turn one and I spun out.

"I tried to brake as much as possible to avoid contact with the barrier, but it was like skating on ice as I was going backwards.

"It was fairly low [speed] impact, but there is some damage to the car so the team will have to work hard tonight to get me ready for tomorrow."
