Amy Cooper grateful for timing of George Floyd murder

NEW YORK, NY – Amy Cooper, the white woman at the center of a confrontation with birdwatcher Christian Cooper [no relation] in Central Park last Monday, is grateful that the murder of George Floyd and subsequent civil unrest has taken national attention away from her actions.

“I really dodged a bullet there,” said Cooper, adding “when that video came out, it was like everyone hated me. But now, everyone’s paying attention to the riots and vilifying those cops, so I’m glad that George Floyd was killed when he was.”

Dubbed the Central Park Karen, Cooper was walking her dog off-leash Monday morning in an on-leash area of Central Park known as The Ramble. When she was approached by Christian Cooper, a member of the board of directors for the New York Audubon Society, she retaliated by calling 911 and telling them an African American man was threatening her life. The interaction was caught on cell-phone video by Christian Cooper.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in Minneapolis, the police were called on African American George Floyd for allegedly passing a counterfeit bill. While Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on the street during the arrest, Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, kept his knee on the right side of Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. 2 minutes and 53 seconds of that time occurred after Floyd became unresponsive.

“I’m not racist, but I’m really glad those cops killed that black guy when they did,” said Cooper. “This whole thing has really been an inconvenience for me. It was getting to the point where I couldn’t go into Starbucks without someone giving me a suspicious look or whispering something under their breath and sliding over to the next table.”

The video of Cooper’s confrontation, shared by millions on social media, sparked outrage across the country, only to be eclipsed days later by the video of Floyd’s death sparking mass demonstrations, protests, and riots throughout the country.

“It’s important to remember that I’m the victim in this situation,” said Cooper. “I was dragged through the mud. They took away my dog, I lost my job; nobody understands how difficult it is to have a target on your back like I have this past week. I’ve apologized for getting caught on camera saying those things and I’m just happy life is getting back to normal for me.”
