Ancelotti praises Rodriguez after ‘important’ win over Spurs

Carlo Ancelotti has praised new signing James Rodriguez following Everton’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham.

Rodriguez made his debut alongside fellow new signings Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in midfield.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s 55th-minute headed goal was the difference as the Toffees took the three points.

Keeper Jordan Pickford also played an important role, saving chances from Spurs duo Dele Alli and Matt Doherty.

After the match, Ancelotti said: “This performance gives us more confidence for the future. We showed what we can do. For the players it was important to show what they can do.

“It’s not easy for everyone to prepare for the start of the season. There was not a lot of time. The new signings had one week of training.

“[The new players] adapted really well. The performance was good.

“James Rodriguez brings his ability to control the ball, to do the right passes, to keep the team comfortable with the ball.

“This was important. But it’s only the first match of the season. We have to see what is going on. I think we can compete with this squad in all the competitions.

“We have to fight to reach Europe. The work we have to do is quite clear.”

Everton will play Salford City next in the Carabao Cup. Their next league fixture is against West Brom on Saturday 19th September, a game they will go into high in confidence.

Ancelotti’s target of bringing European football back to Goodison Park could come true if his new signings perform.

James Rodriguez looked bright in attacking midfield, while Doucoure continues to work hard as a box-to-box player.

Calvert-Lewin looks like he will play an important part in their season if he can reach a respectable level of league goals.

Spurs star Lloris backs Mourinho’s ‘bunch of c**ts’ claim

Hugo Lloris insists Tottenham are ready to win “ugly” and be “naughty” after Jose Mourinho’s claims that Spurs are too nice on the pitch.

Tottenham’s passive style was a prominent theme in the Amazon Prime ‘All or Nothing’ documentary, in which Mourinho said “for 90 minutes, we have to be a bunch of c**ts”.

The north London club kick-off their 2020-21 campaign at home to Everton on Sunday, and captain Lloris agrees Tottenham must be prepared to be “naughty” to win.

“It can be true in football, you sometimes have to know how to win in the ugly way,” Lloris told the Guardian.

“You don’t always need to play the fantastic game to win, you just need to know how to win. Particularly on a bad day, it helps if you still know how to win.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t be a good guy off the field, but when you are on the field you have to do everything you can. You might have to be naughty, to get the winning taste, but if you win that kind of game it makes you even stronger.

“You still need talent and team spirit and all the usual things, but sometimes that’s not enough. The manager is trying to instil a winning mentality, which is something we all have to follow.”

Lloris believes there were positives to take from the end of last season.

“It was tough at times last season but it belongs to the past,” he said. “We have to look ahead, we have to rebuild our confidence and we are making some progress.

“When I look at the games we played after the restart there were some good signals. I could see some improvements, especially in the way our manager wants us to play.

“We should not forget it was not easy for him either, arriving in the middle of the season, but now it’s a new season and important to make a good start.

“We have only had four weeks’ preparation, and there are far too many games to play, but it is the same for everyone. That’s why it is important to make a good start. We have a really good squad with very good spirit and we are ready to start and compete.”
