Atletico Madrid ‘most likely’ to sign £75m-rated Arsenal target

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are “most likely” to sign Arsenal target Lautaro Martinez this summer from Inter Milan, according to reports.

Martinez joined Inter Milan in 2018 from Argentinian outfit Racing Club for around €23m.

The 23-year-old has been an ever-present for the Italian giants over the past three seasons.

The attacker has 49 goals and 20 assists from his 132 outings for Milan across all competitions.

He enjoyed his best season to date in 2020/21 as he helped his side win the Serie A title. He netted 17 goals and provided six assists from his 38 appearances.

Martinez has also shone for Argentina since making his senior debut in 2018. He has 14 goals for his country from his 29 caps. He was part of the squad that won Copa America this summer.

Arsenal have shown interest in the forward of late.

Mundo Deportivo and Argentina’s TNT Sports (as cited by ) have reported that Atletico Madrid are a “more likely destination” for Martinez than Arsenal.

The report adds that Real Madrid are also “candidates” for him, but Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is an “admirer” of Martinez.

The forward came through the academy at Stamford Bridge but he is expected to leave the club this summer. The Blues reportedly rate him at around £40m.

Winterburn believes that Abraham would “fit the bill” at :

“He certainly would fit the bill of recent Arsenal signings, young with a point to prove.

“People will question his consistency but what you want is for these young players to get a run in the team.

“Is he going to get a run in a team if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is playing well? Probably not unless Aubameyang can be switched to the left-hand side – although you then need to leave out either Nicolas Pepe or Bukayo Saka.

“With Abraham, there’s potential there and development for a young, young player. So, I think it’s an option [for] Arsenal, although with Alexandre Lacazette being linked with a move away, it could be just a name that has been thrown into a hat.”

Ex-Prem forward praises Spurs for ‘their best summer deal’

Former Premier League forward Kevin Phillips has suggested that Spurs keeping hold of Son Heung-Min is “their best deal” of the summer.

The 29-year-old joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2015 for around £22m from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.

Son has been a shining light for Spurs since his move to the Premier League. Alongside Harry Kane, he has been a key component of their attacking lineup for the past six seasons.

Last season he grabbed 17 goals and ten assists from his 37 Premier League outings.

. This deal will see him remain with the Londoners until the end of the 2024/25 season, at which point he will be approaching his 33rd birthday.

Phillips has been speaking about Son’s contract extension with . He believes that this is a “huge coup” for :

“I’m a little bit surprised. If he made it clear he wanted to leave, there would be some massive clubs ready to take him.

“You would have to say credit to the player, he loves it at Tottenham.

“You can see that smile whenever he plays and the fans love him as well. He obviously feels comfortable. Maybe he feels with the new manager he’s excited.

“Nuno has obviously said something to convince him of a new contract. Keeping Son is a huge coup and their best deal of the summer.”

“You have to trust Paratici’s knowledge of the Italian market. In that field he is an expert so he will know if a deal is good value or not.

“A lot of people won’t know a lot about Romero. I watched him in the Champions League a couple of times last season and I was impressed. He looks like a top-class player so it will be interesting to see if that one gets over the line.

“Spurs need leaders though. I don’t know if there is a language barrier or whether Romero speaks good English but they need someone who is an organiser back there.”
