'Australians appreciate the naked body'

US photographer Spencer Tunick – famed for his nude crowd images – might be stuck at home, but he's still working on his art.

And he has enlisted Australians to help.

Tunick is ensconced in his New York garret, forced by the coronavirus to cancel a planned trip Down Under this month.

His initial plan had been to stage and shoot another mass nudity gathering on Brisbane Airport's new third runway.

This plan scuppered, he told 9News he had decided to resort to video conferencing.

"There's an element of a mosaic, like colourful, it's almost like it's stained glass," he said.

One of those already volunteering to pose – as he did for Tunick's Melbourne shoot in 2018 – is Sydney man Michael Boland.

"This is just immortalising it now, and the situation we find ourselves in," he said.

Tunick was apparently in no doubt of an enthusiastic reception in Australia.

He picked this wide brown land as the first country for his new project, Stay Apart Together.

"Australians appreciate the naked body," he said.

"They know the difference between art and pornography."
