Barca move for €25m Liverpool man ‘beginning to take shape’

Barcelona have made a move for Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum a key part of their summer transfer plans, according to reports in Spain.

Wijnaldum only has a year left on his contract at Anfield despite being integral to the Reds’ march to the Premier League title this campaign.

A report earlier in August claimed that new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman sees the Dutch international ‘as a building block for Barca’s resurrection’ and features ‘very high’ on his ‘wish list’.

While Mundo Deportivo said on Sunday that Wijnaldum is  about a potential move to the Camp Nou.

Now fellow Spanish publication  (via ) reckon that the possible transfer of the Dutchman to Barcelona is ‘beginning to take shape’ with Koeman making Wijnaldum a ‘priority’ in the market.

Koeman sees Wijnaldum as a ‘non-negotiable goal’ for the Barcelona board with a deal likely to set the Catalan giants back around €25m.

The report adds that Barcelona are waiting for Liverpool to seal a deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara before formally approaching the Reds over Wijnaldum.

Greek police officer slams Maguire over interview ‘lies’

A Greek police officer has claimed Harry Maguire lies “every time he opens his mouth” after the Manchester United captain was arrested in Mykonos ten days ago.

The Man Utd and England defender, 27, was found guilty by a Greek court on Tuesday and handed a suspended 21-month prison sentence but has subsequently , which nullifies the verdict and means Maguire has no criminal record ahead of a full retrial.

He spoke to the BBC on Thursday about the incident, and was concerned he and his family and friends were being kidnapped.

Maguire claimed that incident took place outside a police station after he attempted to take his younger sister Daisy to a hospital because she appeared to be losing consciousness having been approached by two men.

The 27-year-old denied attempting to bribe the police, while he claimed that plain-clothes officers failed to identify themselves.

When asked about bribe claims, Maguire told the BBC: “No, for sure. As soon as I saw that statement, it’s just ridiculous.”

And now a police officer involved on the night has told that they always identify themselves, while he added: “There was no mention of Albanians and nothing about his sister.

“That issue was never raised. We didn’t treat him differently to other drunk British guys.”

On Maguire and the version of events he gave in an interview with the BBC, the police officer continued: “Every time he opens his mouth, he lies. This was just a drunk guy getting in a fight. We deal with it a lot.

“But it has turned into something else with everything he says.

“Why would eight police surround him and not identify themselves? We’d lose our jobs.”
