Bournemouth star Brooks diagnosed stage two Hodgkin lymphoma

AFC Bournemouth and Wales midfielder David Brooks has been diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin lymphoma, the player has confirmed.

Brooks came through the ranks at Sheffield United before he joined the Cherries in 2018. He was part of the squad at Euro 2020.

The 24-year-old has played nine times for Bournemouth this season and he withdrew from the Wales squad for their World Cup qualifiers this month through illness.

The player has now announced that he has cancer of the lymphatic system and will be starting treatment soon.

“This is a very difficult message for me to write,” Brooks said in a statement. “I have been diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin Lymphoma and will begin a course of treatment next week.

“Although this has come as a shock to myself and my family, the prognosis is a positive one and I am confident that I will make a full recovery and be back playing as soon as possible.

“I’d like to show my appreciation to the doctors, nurses, consultants and staff who have been treating me for their professionalism, warmth and understanding during this period.

“I want to thank everyone at the Football Association of Wales because without the swift attention of their medical team we may not have detected the illness.

“I’d also like to say thank you to AFC Bournemouth for all of their support and assistance this past week.

“Although I appreciate that there will be media attention and interest, I would like to ask that my privacy is respected in the coming months and I will share updates on my progress when I am able to do so.

“In the meantime, thank you to everyone for their messages of support – it means so much and will continue to do so in the months ahead.

“I look forward to seeing you all again and playing the sport I love very soon.”

‘Ambitious’ Ranieri determined to save Watford from drop

Watford manager Claudio Ranieri is delighted to be back in the Premier League and is determined to keep the Hornets in the top flight.

The Italian manager joined the club following the sacking of Xisco Munoz before the international break.

He turns 70 years old next week but remains hungry as ever to succeed in management.

“Why not ?” said Ranieri.

“I feel good. Fortunately, I feel good. When I think about football, life is good. Football is my life.

“I am very happy to play in one of the best leagues in the world. I am an ambitious man and I hope to bring Watford to be safe at the end of the season and to improve.

“We have to be safe. The programme is very ambitious and then I hope it will be a fantastic end for Watford and our fans.”

Watford started the season relatively well, with Munoz’s sacking coming as a surprise to some. However, the club’s hierarchy has a reputation for sacking managers.

They are currently 15th in the Premier League, winning two of their first seven league fixtures.

“In Italy it is normal to change the manager,” Ranieri added.

“We have to do our best, I can’t think about the previous manager.

“Xisco was my player at Valencia, I hope he can find a new solution very soon.

“Now, I have to do my best for Watford.”

He believes that the Hornets’ managerial change has created some unpredictability going into the fixture.

: “It seems to always happen to us, I think, when teams are maybe going through a sticky patch and the manager changes before we play them. That makes them more unpredictable, I think.

“Obviously I think it’s always going to be tough. Whether they’re flying or they change the manager, it’s going to be tough. It’s the Premier League, there’s good teams and teams who are struggling are going to want to turn it around.”
