Businessman’s kidnappers sentenced to ten years in jail

Kidnappers Dube Mhlanga, 22,  and Sibongiseni Simon Mdingi, 38, have been sentenced in the Mthatha Regional Court to ten years in jail for kidnapping an Eastern Cape businessman and demanding a R1 million ransom.

Kidnappers, Mhlanga and Mdingi were convicted of abducting 27-year-old businessman, Vuyolwethu Fadana, of Corhana Village in Libode, and demanding a R1 million ransom.

Hawks regional spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said that three suspects had kidnapped the businessman, while he was on his way home from his family business at the Madeira Mall in Libode. The third suspect, Michael Wopela, 39, was shot during a shootout with police when they swooped on the kidnappers and rescued the businessman, just days later.

Mgolodela said that on the day of the kidnapping, Fadana had been busy removing a branch that was blocking the entrance to his driveway, when the suspects hit him on the back of his head with a blunt object and he lost consciousness.

“When he regained consciousness, he discovered that he was held in his vehicle by three armed men who promised not to harm him if he complied with their instructions,” he said.

“A ransom of R1 million was demanded from his family and the police were alerted. An operation was conducted which led to the safe rescue of Fadana, five days after the kidpanning,” Mgolodela said.

Mgolodela  said that during the rescue operation police had engaged in a shootout with the kidnappers during which the third suspect was killed.

He said the kidnappers had been kept in custody throughout the trial and made several court appearances in the Mthatha Regional Court until they were convicted and sentenced on Wednesday.

Hawks’ Provincial Head in the Eastern Cape, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya commended the Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation team for ensuring that the criminals faced the full might of law.

The suspects were sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment.
