CAF Confed Cup match report | Orlando Pirates draw away to Diables Noirs – 15 October

Orlando Pirates picked a crucial draw away to Diables Noirs in their first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second round match on Friday.

DIABLES NOIRS VS ORLANDO PIRATES | AS IT HAPPENED

Diables Noirs took control of the match in the early stages of the match as Pirates were still trying to feet their feet in front of the home fans.

Kwanda Mngonyama had to make an important clearance after the Pirates defence was breached by Diables Noirs inside the opening five minutes.

Pirates the won a free-kick in a promising area after Kabelo Dlamini was brought down by Diables Noirs.

However, the resulting free-kick went wide from an Abel Mabaso’s attempt as Pirates let Diables off the hook.

Mngonyama proved to be the man standing between Diables Noirs and a goal as he halted another attack by the Brazzaville-based outfit.

He would then play the ball to Makaringe who didn’t waste too much time on the ball as he rolled it to Mabasa upfront.

However, the Pirates striker was denied by the on-rushing goalkeeper as the visitors appeared to have to settled down a bit.

Pirates won a number of free-kicks in the opposition half but they weren’t able to turn them into real goalscoring chances.

Siyabonga Mpontshane also had to guard his penalty area with crosses played into the Pirates box by Diables Noirs.

The second half proved to be a physical affair as Diables Noirs went hard on Pirates in terms of their tackles.

Happy Jele was the first casualty as he ended up receiving medical attention after being kicked on the head whilst trying to clear a dangerous cross played into the Pirates box.

The Pirates skipper passed a concussion test, and was up on his feet in less than two minutes to marshal the defence.

Goalscoring chances were few and far between despite both teams trying hard to create them and possibly score.

Pirates brought on Thabang Monare for Kabelo Dlamini in an attempt to strengthen their midfield after the hour-mark.

The final 15 minutes saw Pirates make no less than three substitutions with Thulani Hlatshwayo, Nkanyiso Zungu and Collins Makgaka entering the field.

However, it was Diables Noirs who nearly scored as they forced Mpontshane into a brilliant save in the closing stages of the game.

Ultimately, both teams settled for a goalless draw; a good result for Pirates away from home going into the return leg next week.

Ingredients

  • 230 g mushrooms, trimmed and very finely chopped

  • 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced

  • 1 tablespoon oil

  • ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt

  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 7 tablespoons ketchup, divided

  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs or use homemade bread crumbs

  • cup milk

  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

  • ½ kg ground turkey (92% lean)

Method

  • Heat the oven to 205°C. Lightly oil a rimmed baking sheet (or 9-inch by 13-inch baking pan) lined with aluminum foil.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened; about 5 minutes.
  • Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the mushrooms, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of pepper. Cook until the mushrooms give off their liquid and it boils away; about 10 minutes.
  • Transfer the onions and mushrooms to a large bowl, and then stir in the Worcestershire sauce and three tablespoons of the ketchup. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine the breadcrumbs and milk in a small bowl. Stir the breadcrumb mixture and the eggs into the mushrooms and onions. Using a fork or your hands, gently mix in the turkey, ¼ teaspoon of salt, and a ¼ teaspoon of pepper. The mixture will be very wet.
  • Form the meatloaf into a 9-inch by 5-inch oval in the middle of the prepared baking sheet. Spread the remaining four tablespoons of ketchup on top.
  • Bake the meatloaf until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meatloaf registers 77°C, about 50 minutes.
  • Allow standing for 5 minutes before slicing.
