Lamenting that “cancel culture” has made it more difficult than ever to preach the virtues of jihad at an institution like al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri announced Monday that he is leaving the terror organization and launching an Islamist newsletter on Substack.

“While I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work for and lead al Qaeda, it is no longer the dynamic, free, and open forum for terrorist activities that it once was,” Zawahiri, who had led the terror group since May 2011, explained in his first Substack post. “Every fatwa, video recording, and terror attacked is second-guessed by the Twitter mob, with little room for nuance and dissent.”

Zawahiri has come under scrutiny in the past year for failing to incorporate Critical Jihad Theory into al Qaeda’s terrorist attacks.

“It is time we put more effort into making sure our suicide bombings are promoting equity and deconstructing racial and gender norms,” a group of young al Qaeda recruits wrote in a recent open letter to al Qaeda leadership. “We must also make sure al Qaeda is a welcoming workplace for transgender, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ jihadis.”

Zawahiri is expected to go into more detail on his future plans when he appears as a guest this week on former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s podcast.
