Christmas Ornament Balance Race

Christmas Ornament Balance Race is fun and easy gross motor activity for toddlers and preschoolers. This is a great indoor activity for kids over the holidays!

Often when I do gross motor activities with my toddlers they are outside in warmer weather. But this holiday season I wanted to try doing some more indoor gross motor activities with them to help break up those cold days that we are stuck inside. This Christmas Ornament Balance Race definitely was a lot of fun.

It was challenging for my 2.5 year olds but once I made it into a fun game they really got into it!

Playing Christmas Ornament Balance Race

Setting this up is super simple. I originally made lines on the floor for them to follow and walk along using painter’s tape but quickly realized that this was a little too challenging for them to follow as well as to keep their Christmas ornament in their spoons. So we pivoted and I told them to ignore the lines and just walk. The lines would be great for preschoolers or even kindergartners.

First, I placed all of our shatterproof Christmas ornaments into a laundry basket. I handed each of my toddlers a spoon and asked them to grab an ornament, place it on their spoon and walk and balance it over to the other bag across the room.

If the bauble fell they had to pick it up and continue. I didn’t make them start again but this is something you could do with older children.

How to Play

To make it even more fun I placed our cardboard box Christmas Tree from the Christmas Ornament Counting activity at the other end and then they had to place their ornaments on the tree.

Other variations: instead of Christmas baubles you could use small boxes and pretend they are presents that your kids have to save and return to Santa’s toy sack. Place a big bag at the end and have them deposit their presents in it!
