Cole likens ‘outstanding’ Chelsea star to former teammate

Joe Cole says Kai Havertz is an “outstanding” talent and likened him to former Blues teammate Eidur Gudjohnson.

Havertz arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2020 for £72million after consistently brilliant performances for Bayer Leverkusen.

But the German international struggled at the start of his Premier League career, before improving towards the end of the campaign, ending it by scoring the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City.

Havertz was handed a start for Chelsea in the 7-0 demolishing of Norwich following the injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, and Cole said ahead of the game that he sees similarities between the 22-year-old and Gudjohnson.

“Outstanding player and I love him in this position [up front],” Cole told BT Sport before Chelsea’s clash against Norwich.

“It’s interesting Thomas Tuchel says he doesn’t see him as a false nine, he sees him as a nine. He played his best stuff in Germany in that role, it frees him up.

“He’s what I like to call a penalty box player where he comes alive, he gets more space there. He makes clever runs.

“With Kai Havertz he reminds me a lot of Eidur, when he played here he could play that role as a nine but also play in midfield.

“I think he’s going to relish the next five or six games where he’ll look at those and think there’s goal in there for me.”

Havertz failed to get on the scoresheet against Norwich at Stamford Bridge and was perhaps one of the poorer performers, but will hope for further chances in the kind fixtures to come.

Meanwhile, Tuchel has admitted that he ‘fell into a trap’ when he was asked about the possibility of signing Erling Haaland.

Tuchel said: “I fell into a trap. I got an award in Germany. I got an award from a newspaper. They gave me this award and asked me about a player.

“Normally I never, never speak about other players, because I simply never do. And we were making more or less fun about it and I should have known better because in making fun about it and being a nice guy to answer a question, instead of ‘no I don’t want to answer a question,’ getting this award I joke about a double striker with Romelu in October and it gets like we put an offer in. That was the context, but I should have known better.”

Tuchel admits ‘bit of luck and momentum’ needed to crush Norwich

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has offered his though on Chelsea’s 7-0 destruction of Norwich on Saturday afternoon.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James and Ben Chilwell and a Max Aarons own goal helped Chelsea extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

, Tuchel was pleased with with his sides performance.

“We played a good performance. We were sharp and put in a lot of effort. We pressed high and won many balls, we played with a high rhythm and created a lot of chances. To score seven you also need a bit of luck and momentum, but it was a good effort.

“This is just one game, the next one follows on Tuesday evening [in the EFL Cup]. The players deserve all the credit, but it’s also only one game.

“The focus was that we keep the same intensity and we create opportunities. This is what we demanded. You need luck to score and you need the moment. That’s why I’m happy because the intensity was high and the rhythm was high.

The German also admitted he felt Daniel Farke, who he worked with at Borussia Dortmund.

“I feel very sorry [for Daniel Farke] because we did not stop and we didn’t want to stop. We said at half-time we wanted to keep going. It feels horrible for Daniel today – I hope he keeps his head up and puts his team back on track. He deserves it and he’s a good guy.”

Mount ended his goal-drought in fine fashion against the Canaries and Tuchel was quick to praise the England international.

No matter how satisfied the coach is, the offensive guys need goals to be fully happy. He waited too long, so it was good that he got some goals today.

“I think it’s a process. We’re still in between international breaks. I think it’s normal [for players to be tired]. I agree today that Mason looked fresh and it was good to put him on the pitch. We have to be careful with these players who play important roles in their national teams in important competitions.”
