Czech Republic to get Chinese vaccines

Beijing 'immediately' agreed to sending vaccines to the second EU recipient after Hungary

Czech Republic to get Chinese vaccines

The Czech Republic today became the second EU country after Hungary to request coronavirus vaccines from China, according to a statement from President Miloš Zeman’s office.

It is not clear how many doses were ordered by one of the European Union’s worst-hit countries in the latter part of the year-long pandemic.

“The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic [Andrej Babis] has asked the President of the Republic to contact the President of the People’s Republic of China [Xi Jinping] to request the delivery of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine,” the statement said.

“The President of the Republic granted this request and wrote to the President of the People’s Republic of China. According to a report by the Czech embassy in Beijing, the Chinese side decided to comply with this request immediately,” according to the statement, posted on the website of the Czech presidential office.

The move followed Prague’s decision to buy Sputnik V vaccines from Russia, as Babis lashed out at the EU’s slow provision of vaccines to member states.
