Ex-Prem forward praises Spurs for ‘their best summer deal’

Former Premier League forward Kevin Phillips has suggested that Spurs keeping hold of Son Heung-Min is “their best deal” of the summer.

The 29-year-old joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2015 for around £22m from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.

Son has been a shining light for Spurs since his move to the Premier League. Alongside Harry Kane, he has been a key component of their attacking lineup for the past six seasons.

Last season he grabbed 17 goals and ten assists from his 37 Premier League outings.

. This deal will see him remain with the Londoners until the end of the 2024/25 season, at which point he will be approaching his 33rd birthday.

Phillips has been speaking about Son’s contract extension with . He believes that this is a “huge coup” for :

“I’m a little bit surprised. If he made it clear he wanted to leave, there would be some massive clubs ready to take him.

“You would have to say credit to the player, he loves it at Tottenham.

“You can see that smile whenever he plays and the fans love him as well. He obviously feels comfortable. Maybe he feels with the new manager he’s excited.

“Nuno has obviously said something to convince him of a new contract. Keeping Son is a huge coup and their best deal of the summer.”

“You have to trust Paratici’s knowledge of the Italian market. In that field he is an expert so he will know if a deal is good value or not.

“A lot of people won’t know a lot about Romero. I watched him in the Champions League a couple of times last season and I was impressed. He looks like a top-class player so it will be interesting to see if that one gets over the line.

“Spurs need leaders though. I don’t know if there is a language barrier or whether Romero speaks good English but they need someone who is an organiser back there.”

Terry leaving Aston Villa ‘inevitable’ but a ‘blow’, claims pundit

John Terry leaving Aston Villa is a “blow” for Dean Smith’s side and the timing of his departure is “odd”, according to Frank McAvennie.

Terry spent a season with as a player in 2017/18. After retiring, the defender became Dean Smith’s assistant manager at Villa in October 2018.

The Chelsea legend has spent three seasons in that role. This has been a successful period for the Villans which was started by them earning promotion back to the Premier League in 2018/19.

McAvennie has had his say on Terry’s departure in an interview with . He is “shocked” at the timing of his exit:

“It was inevitable he was going to move, it’s a blow. He’s always made it known he wants to be a manager.

“He will have learned so much from Dean Smith, it was a great decision to move to Villa in the first place.

“I know a lot of people who have taken that step. They have been an assistant then maybe gone to Europe for a job.

“Everything he’s said has been the right thing. It’s just a bit surprising how quickly it’s happened. There wasn’t even a hint.

“The season is so close as well, it’s an odd time to do it. I’m shocked.

“I wish him all the best though, hopefully he can do a Steven Gerrard and find success.”

Elsewhere, Aston Villa are planning moves for three midfielders with

They have over the £30m signing of Leon Bailey. He was involved in 17 goals from his 30 Bundesliga outings last season.

On Friday it was revealed that the Villans have had a

Their third target is Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell.

It is believed that the Canaries have “no intention” of selling Cantwell and it would take a “huge offer” for them to be tempted to cash in on the midfielder.
