Formula E's Agag: Honda withdrawal 'bad for motorsport'

Formula E founder Alejandro Agag says the news of Honda's departure from Formula 1 at the end of 2021 is a big blow for motorsport as a whole.

Honda announced on Friday that it will conclude its partnerships with Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri at the next of next year, leaving the energy drink company's teams in need of a new engine supplier.

Honda says its decision was rooted in the paradigm shift of the automobile industry and a strategic need to devote its engineering resources to electric cars, alternative energy and its quest to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

"I see it as bad news for motorsport in general," Agag told Reuters. “I don’t see this as good news for Formula E and bad news for Formula 1.

"We in Formula E also need Formula 1 to be successful because we don’t see each other as competitors. We see each other as on the same boat and competing against tennis, football and other sports."

Honda president Takahiro Hachigo said the Japanese manufacturer would maintain its presence in IndyCar and in other motorsport categories, but dismissed an entry into Formula E, at least for now.

"If one manufacturer leaves motorsport, it doesn’t mean it’s going to come through another door to us," said Agag.

"It may stay out of motorsport altogether so that’s not good news."

McLaren: New MCL35 nose will help unlock 'more potential'

McLaren says the new nose design raced by the team in Russia is the element of a package that will gradually help the team extract more performance from its car moving forward.

McLaren trialed the new Mercedes-style experimental nose in practice at Mugello before Lando Norris raced the element at Sochi following the component's mid-season homologation.

The change in itself did not deliver a significant performance boost to McLaren's MCL35, but its implementation is seen as a new aero approach and a first step towards the completion of a package that should improve the pace of the Woking-based outfit's contender.

"With the mid-season homologation date, we obviously wanted to gain experience with it as quickly as possible," explained Seidl, quoted by Motorsport.com.

"That's why we also decided to actually test it step-by-step as soon as we had certain parts of this package available.

"So, the target is clear, that's the development direction we have seen in the windtunnel with this different nosebox concept. It is something that we believe is the right direction to head to for the future.

"It gives us more potential, in terms of unlocking even more potential from the car in terms of performance. And that's the direction we are heading to.

"So the plan is to gradually now bring step-by-step more parts of this package to the track, with a clear goal to unlock more performance."

McLaren is currently third in F1's Constructors' standings, but with Racing Point and Renault just a handful of points behind and snapping at its heels, strides in development will prove crucial in helping the team maintain its edge over its midfield rivals.

"We have acknowledged that they made a good step forward and it's simply down to us now to make sure that we also progress with our car and find the next step in terms of pace if we want to keep this battle alive," said Seidl.

"It's important to analyse what happened [in Russia], also analyse in detail what the introduction of this new nose box did on Lando's car. And then it's important to make the right conclusions and bring upgrades to keep this battle alive."
