An oil tanker has flipped after colliding with two other vehicles in Gauteng, and the fatal N1 crash is causing a traffic nightmare.

It’s understood that at least one person has been killed in a horrific crash on the N1 in Gauteng. The incident, which took place after the exit onto William Nicol for Rivonia traffic, saw an oil tanker collide with two other vehicles.

Latest traffic news for Gauteng: N1 crash causing hold-ups

The truck carrying the flammable chemicals is believed to have suffered a puncture, forcing the driver to lose control of his rig. After crashing into the barrier, the tanker caught fire, after having made contact with two other motors.

Meanwhile, harrowing footage of the aftermath has been uploaded online. The oil tanker, flipped over and laying on its side, also saw its lorry cab crumpled in a twisted heap of metal. One of the other vehicles involved erupted into a fireball, almost immediately after the lorry smashed into it.

Gauteng traffic updates on Tuesday 28 September

As of 11:30 on Tuesday 28 September, motorists are still being asked to avoid the area, while recovery operations continue. There is heavy traffic on BOTH sides of the N1 carriageway.

First responders Emer-G-Med have since provided us with an update, confirming that the death toll stands at one for now, with another woman ‘in critical condition’ after she was rushed to hospital:

“One man was killed and three others injured this morning when a truck carrying chemicals and two light motor vehicles collided on the N1 northbound between William Nicol and Rivonia.”

“Medics had pulled a man and woman from the burning vehicle. They assessed the patients and found that the man from the burning vehicle had already succumbed to his burn wounds while the woman was in a critical condition.”

“The truck driver was found lying on the highway in a serious condition while another woman from the overturned vehicle escaped with minor injuries. Medics treated the patients… with advanced life support interventions.”

Meanwhile another Kaizer Chiefs midfield target in the form of South Africa Under-23 star Thabo Cele is on the verge of signing for a new team in Poland.

Though the Amakhosi were his reported first choice back home in South Africa, he has reportedly made progress in signing a contract in Europe.
