Man City boss Pep Guardiola has said that he must work hard this season to warrant a contract extension with the club.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss became Man City boss in the summer of 2016, signing a three-year deal.
In his second season, he helped City to the Premier League title, finishing on a record-breaking tally of 100-points.
During that summer, Guardiola was given a contract extension that expires at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
The Spaniard is starting his fifth season managing Man City. This is already the longest time he has spent managing a club. He departed Barcelona after four seasons, and he left Bayern Munich after three years in Germany.
Guardiola told that he wants to stay at Man City, but he needs to prove that he deserves an extension:
“I would love to stay longer here.
“To extend the contract I have to deserve it and we are going to see if I deserve it this season, in terms of how the team goes forward and improves.”
Guardiola has enjoyed a lot of success at Man City so far. He has guided them to two Premier League titles, along with three Carabao Cups and one FA Cup.
But for their standards, the 2019/20 campaign was disappointing. They finished 19 points behind Liverpool to finish second in the league.
City were also knocked out at the Quarter-Final stage of the Champions League. They were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Lyon, despite being among the favourites to win the competition.
The 49-year-old is well aware of the expectations on him, and he knows City higher-ups demand a big season this year.
Guardiola added: “They haven’t pushed anything since day one. They allow me to do my job as best as I can with my staff and players and this is going to continue.
“They didn’t tell me when what I have to win – they told me to play. I know the standards of this club, and I have to win and deserve to extend my contract.”
