There are two meetings to focus on this Friday, with night racing in Melton and at Albion Park we’ll see a couple of heats of the Jim McNeil Trotters Championship.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Albion Park

Best bet: Race 4, Number 13, Aladdin Sane
This horse is a quirky trotter that can do things wrong, but there is no doubting his ability and he can make it three on end. This horse made a mistake two back but was able to recover and prove too good, then was dominant last time. This horse has to do work in order to win here, but he has shown recently that he can work and still be strong at the end.

Next best: Race 7, Number 6, Tiz A Sizzler
He’s flying and there is no reason to jump off him. This horse had a dominant win last time out when leading and going a very slick last half in cruising to another win. He’s putting together a good record. It will be interesting to see what he does from the wide gate, but ability wise, he is clearly the best horse in the race.

Value: Race 6, Number 8, Mykindoffeeling
This horse will need things to fall into place, but if they do, she can run a positive race at odds. Most of her racing to date has come at Redcliffe, but her two runs at Albion Park have been more than sound. Nicks Pick, the horse drawn directly in front of this mare, has gate speed and should it hold up, Mykindoffeeling lands leaders back and will be dangerous.

Melton

Best bet: Race 1, Number 4, Island Blue Chip
On paper, the numerical form isn’t flash reading, but she has shown talent in those outings and this is clearly the weakest race she has contested in her career to date. This horse resumes for Brent Lilley and has trialled well in readiness for her return. Chris Alford will be aggressive, hopefully finding the front and proving too good.

Next best: Race 2, Number 6, Spirited Belle
This horse is short but should be winning. This horse is an Emma Stewart-trained mare who has been excellent since coming from NZ, winning two from three. The latest of those wins was at Ararat when leading throughout and running sharp time relative to the meeting. This horse has enough gate speed to cross and should she lead, then it’s race over.

Value: Race 5, Number 1, The Golden Cross
He is a 1×3 play at the odds. This horse hasn’t been too bad in a couple of runs back from a spell. This horse drew wide last time here and worked home well without being a winning threat. This horse has a much better gate to use this time around and he can hold a forward, hopefully leaders back, and be a knockout chance.

Two meetings to look at on Thursday night, with Penrith hosting their traditional timeslot, while in Victoria, racing takes place at Ballarat. Down below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Penrith

Best bet: Race Four Number 1 Out Megastar

Any glimpse of his recent Menangle efforts and he’ll be winning this. I was keen on him last time out at Newcastle.

He drew the second row and ran okay, but was disappointing. Draws the inside this time around and should hold a forward spot. If he leads, then it’s race over.

Next best: Race One Number 1 Etiz Amodel
She is a decent enough gamble in the opener.

Ian Wilson trains with Blake Fitzpatrick to drive. She was going just fair but her last couple of efforts have been quite strong from tricky draws. She can get the back of the leader here from the pole and prove very hard to beat with luck getting clear.

Value: Race Seven Number 1 Pearl Button
She’s decent enough value in a winnable race.

She’s shown good gate speed to lead her past couple here and has run okay without attacking the line. She might be better with a bunny to chase, so hopefully can land leaders back and from there, she’ll only run well at odds.

Ballarat

Best bet: Race Six Number 6 Imagoldcloud

Looks the best on the program. The Alfords combine with this gelding, who drops a fair bit in overall depth after racing pretty well during a recent rich series.

This looks a very suitable race for this four-year-old and with Chris Alford steering, I dare say he’ll press forward and prove hard to run down.

Next best: Race Four Number 5 Master Stride
Tricky race with all the runners being first starters, but I was impressed by the trial of this colt. He sat back and closed off strongly in good time under no real pressure in a nice piece of work. Betting will be the guide, but off the trials, he’s the one to beat, but as I said, watch the market.

Value: Race Eight Number 1 My Used To Be
Former South Australian-trained trotter that looks a knockout chance despite strong depth engaged.

First run in Victoria came at Yarra Valley when getting leaders back and sprinting well. He’ll get a similar run this time around and although this is harder, he is a winner and has upside to come.
