Harness racing selections: Saturday, September 25

There are two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with Albion Park and Menangle getting my focus.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Albion Park

Best bet: Race 10, Number 2, Leap To Fame
It is a bit of a shame that this is the last race because there is quality deluxe engaged. There was a lot of arrogance about his win last Friday after sitting parked against the older horses. He made a mess of them. Back to his own age, he’ll find the front and take a power of beating.

Next best: Race 9, Number 3, Cobbity Castle
This mare has just grown another leg since coming to Queensland. Whatever race the Frisby camp sets her for, she just finds a way and has been a revelation. This is one of the tougher challenges to date for her, but she has the gate speed to lead and she’ll make sure Peppa Bliss knows she’s in a race.

Value: Race 3, Number 8, Beast Mode
He has been safely held his past two, but hasn’t exactly had the rub of the green. That changes here with an inside second-row draw, where he follows out a fast beginner and potentially could land leaders back. If that eventuates, an improved showing is definitely on the cards at a decent price.

Menangle

Best bet: Race 1, Number 4, Ilikemebettor
He let punters down last Saturday but butter up and you should be rewarded. He was just chasing from the outset last Saturday and by the time he got near the front, he was a tired horse. That was his first run since July 24, so there is significant room for improvement.

Next best: Race 2, Number 3, Muscle Factory
This is a quirky animal, but when he’s right, he’s very good, and he should be winning this. This horse resumes for team McCarthy off the back of a quiet trial here a couple of weeks ago, but I am not reading too much into that. Going off his race-day form, he’ll be a bit too good for this bunch.

Value: Race 8, Number 2, Bronski Belle
She’ll likely go around double figures and with that, she is definitely worth an each-way ticket. This horse has had no luck with draws in recent times but that changes here with a good inside draw to get a cheap run. She is a mare who is effective when getting a soft trip and dashing late, so she gets a good set-up.

Sydney and Melbourne racing selections: Rosehill and Sandown tips for Saturday, September 25

We return to Rosehill this Saturday after a solid break from the golden west due to our favourite pandemic.

It’s good to be back, the track should be fresh, firm and fair and I’m returning to some sort of form. They say two in a row is consecutive, but three is a streak – which is hopefully where I’m heading with the big races coming up.

Dixie’s 2021-22 season tally (from August 1)
Outlay: 69 units
Return: 53.70 units
Stats are based on one unit being equal to a $1 win bet, New South Wales dividends. See the comments for any changes based on scratchings or track condition.

Sydney racing selections

Race 1 – 8 Yiyi (two units)
Current odds: $4
Expect to go close starting the day with 8 Yiyi. He’s been a boom horse all prep (five runs under $5) and hasn’t been worse than third. The on-speeders had the advantages off a slow pace there. He’s suited at home and back slightly in trip.
Danger: 5 Crystal Pegasus.

Race 2 – 16 Can Do It (one unit)
Current odds: $18
Not a race I’m overly keen on, but with the best horses drawing the car park, I think 16 Can Do It is worth a nibble going forward from a good draw. He won two trials before finishing fourth at Nowra fresh. He’s fit into this and he gets his chance.
Danger: 4 So Say You.

Race 3 – 7 Calgary Queen (one unit)
Current odds: $4.60
From the Highway to the Midway, 7 Calgary Queen is another on-speeder who raced for black type before her latest break. She’s come back well at this sort of level. James McDonald on is a plus.
Danger: 3 Ruby Tuesday.

Race 4 – 8 Skymax (one unit)
Current odds: $21
It is almost eight months to the day since Skyman won a listed race over this trip on Australia Day as $2.80 fave. Yes he was ordinary fresh but he was always going to need that run. He’s out to his pet distance and shapes to get a nice run. Worth a specky.
Danger: 6 No Compromise.

Race 5 – 1 Sword of State (one unit)
Current odds: $8.50
Another New Zealander from the Richards camp over here to pilfer our riches, this boy won his last two by a combined ten lengths. Sixty kilos and 1100 are risks but he’s a great price against B-grade colts here.
Danger: 3 Paulele.

Race 6 – 2 Best of Days (one unit)
Current odds: $11
If 2 Best of Days brings his best stuff to Rosehill, he wins this. He’s returned well, gets his best hard track and this is his grade. He’s big overs.
Danger: 10 Love Tap.

Race 7 – 5 Fituese (one unit)
Current odds: $7
The favourite here is probably pretty good. Going around her, 5 Fituese is the form horse and can challenge at what looks to be a suitable 1400-metre trip. She’s been flying home from well back and should get last crack at them.
Danger: 2 Entriviere.

Race 8 – 1 Anamoe (one unit)
Current odds: $2
1 Anamoe was superb fresh and has been primed for this. This horse might just be too good. If he was to win this, what would you do? Everest versus Epsom versus Cox Plate? Dare to dream, I guess. He’s a ripper.
Danger: 2 Artorius (was superb first up).

Race 9 – 9 French Emperor (one unit)
Current odds: $7
Gear changes galore but I am backing 9 French Emperor, who was solid behind 6 Profondo fresh before running all over the place but still having a soft kill at Goulburn on his way here. He is very good.
Danger: 6 Profondo.

Race 10 – 8 Bullfinch (two units)
Current odds: $8.50
If I have anything left I’ll be throwing it at 8 Bullfinch. He was great from the back first up, he drops right down in weight and second up and 1400 metres are plus, plus. Glyn Schofield back from injury is another tick.
Danger: 12 Snitzify ($35).

Melbourne racing selections

Race 4 – 2 Zouzarella (two units)
Current odds: $2.20
This horse has been impressive winning both starts and should make it three from three.

Race 5 – 4 Romancer (one unit)
Current odds: $10
This horse was wide all the way in a big Group 1 last week. Same story the start before. He’s great value.

Race 6 – 5 Floating Artist (two units)
Current price: $3.60
This fella has been great since getting out to his distance range. He’ll keep going from near the front here.

Good luck all. Another big day after some massive rugby league and the Moir on Friday. Stay safe and bet well.
