Henderson ‘delighted’ for ‘outstanding’ £36m Liverpool star

Jordan Henderson is “delighted” for Liverpool’s “outstanding” defender Ibrahima Konate after he featured in their 5-0 win over Manchester United.

Konate was Liverpool’s only signing in the summer. They activated his £36m release clause to sign him from German outlet RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old had played 95 times for Leipzig across four seasons going back to 2017.

Konate started against Manchester United on Sunday. This was his second Premier League appearance of the season and only his third across all competitions.

The defender performed well as he helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet. They beat Man Utd 5-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah and early goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota.

As reported by the , Henderson priased Konate for being “outstanding” against Man Utd:

“I thought he was outstanding. We’ve got a few very, very good centre-backs so it’s difficult, but I thought he was top class,” Henderson said.

“You’ve got to be to get a clean sheet at Old Trafford so I’m delighted for him and delighted for the team in terms of a clean sheet, I thought, was big for us and we need to keep that going.

“To concede two in midweek we were disappointed with after going 2-0 up, so we knew today we wanted to try to keep a clean sheet, which I thought was very good for us.

“And we obviously scored some amazing goals, which is what everybody wants to see as well.

“It’s totally different with the fans in the stadium. We can appreciate this a lot more now that we’ve got fans back.

“We’ve played in empty stadiums, it’s a totally different game.

“It’s amazing to have the fans back and it was extra special for us to win in front of a full house.”

“What can I say? Did I expect that? No. What we did in the last third was insane. Pressing high, winning balls, scored wonderful goals.

“I told them at half-time to play better. We started incredibly well and stopped playing football. We controlled the game after the fifth, it was not about scoring more, just trying to get out without more injuries.

“The result is insane, I asked if there was one like this in history and if there isn’t then it will take a while. The players put a nice piece in the book.

“It is special but we don’t celebrate like crazy, we have respect for the opponents. We were lucky in some moments, United are not in their best moment.”

Wright: Ex-Chelsea director must be ‘very high’ on Newcastle’s list

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has suggested that Newcastle United have a “massive problem” if they are not targeting Michael Emenalo to be their new sporting director.

At the start of this month, Newcastle’s Saudi-led takeover was completed. This ended Mike Ashley’s 14-year stint at the helm of the Magpies.

It was expected that Steve Bruce would lose his job and this was confirmed earlier this week. Graeme Jones has stepped in on an interim basis.

Newcastle are still yet to win in the Premier League from their nine outings. They are looking to bring in a new director of football, and .

Emenalo was Chelsea’s director for six years between 2011 and 2017. He also had a spell at Monaco for two years before he left the French club in 2019.

On the , Wright suggested that Emenalo should be “very high up” on Newcastle’s list of targets:

“If they’ve got a list, and he’s not very high up on that list, then you know they have a massive problem,” Wright said.

“For that man to still not be in some form of football employment, at the level of football management, is still, for me, incredible. It really is.

“Only because it’s what they need. He’s the calibre of person of what they need.”

Newcastle drew with Crystal Palace over the weekend.

“With Cal he is a unique striker. In training he is a good finisher, he works and is a fantastic professional but on matchday there is a stimulation that comes out of him that he has the mentality to perform for Newcastle United.

“He is the best matchday finisher I have worked with and that is not even half a chance and it’s in the back of the net which tells you everyone about Callum Wilson.”

Jones added: “We came here to win. That was the intention. We didn’t so the next best thing is a point.

“Off the ball I was pleased with the organisation and understanding of the runs. I think we limited Palace to one chance in the first half and in the second half they have had two. It is a base for us to start.

“I would like for us to be better on the ball but that doesn’t come overnight. It takes time and we’ve concentrated on trying to shore up a little bit and not concede as many goals. I think that worked.”
