The open floor plan—in which the cooking, dining, and living areas are all in the same room—has been the amenity of choice for many home buyers and renters for years. It’s often touted in listing details. Turn on any HGTV show, and you’ll hear a home makeover star talk about knocking down walls and opening up the layout.
But living through the COVID-19 pandemic has people rethinking the practicality of an open floor plan. With so many of us working, studying, and schooling from home, having everyone in the same room—all day, every day—can get a little old. Taking conference calls or finishing up an important project can be challenging if you can hear others doing their work in the same room. This new work-school-live-from-home situation has us wondering: Is the open floor plan over?
Other topics we discuss this week:
- Two vastly different homes (one in Los Angeles and one in Nashville, TN) designed by the “Property Brothers” stars that hit the market this week
- Home improvement and design advice we learned from our dads
- A $7.5 million glass house in Dallas for sale
- This week’s celebrity real estate winner and loser
