IPL 2020: BCCI Struggling To Get ICC Elite Panel Umpires On Board

Board of Control for India (BCCI) is still pursuing the umpires in the ICC Elite panel to officiate the IPL 2020 scheduled to begin from 19th September. Most of the umpires in the elite panel have not confirmed while some have rejected the Indian board’s offer. This is all believed to be because of the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic. The unprecedented virus is going to affect BCCI’s plan which was reportedly planning to hire more Elite umpires since there was no international cricket scheduled during the upcoming IPL. Usually, BCCI recruits six foreign elite umpires during an IPL season.

According to the Times of India, only three overseas umpires from ICC’s elite panel have agreed to BCCI and the board is still pursuing them. As per the source, Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena, who has been regular in the IPL over the years, has turned down this season deal. Other umpires are concerned about their health.

“BCCI had approached quite a few Elite umpires but they have rejected the offer. For instance, Kumar Dharmasena, who has been a regular in IPL over the years, has categorically said no to BCCI. He said he would be busy with cricket in Sri Lanka,”  a source said.

“The Elite panel umpires draw a heavy package from ICC’s contract. So, they are not exactly jobless. They don’t want to take any risk in these times,” the source said.

Chris Gaffney from and Richard Illingworth and Michael Gough from England are the three foreign umpires that have confirmed their presence. The latest inductee in the Elite panel, India’s Nitin Menon, has also accepted the BCCI’s offer.

India’s international panel umpires; Anil Chaudhary C Shamshuddin, Virender Sharma and KN Ananthapadmanabhan and former Elite panel umpire S Ravi is also on the list.

Overall, 12 umpires are entrusted with the on-field and TV umpire duties and three will only do the job of the fourth umpire.

However, the unavailability of foreign umpires would give chance to Indian umpires in this impending IPL season.
