Johnson & Johnson applied for vaccine approval in UK late last week

Johnson & Johnson sent an application for British regulators to approve its one-shot coronavirus vaccine late last week, a spokesperson confirmed on Monday.

The company sent a formal conditional marketing authorization to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) “for consideration as part of their ongoing rolling review seeking authorization for our single-dose Janssen COVID-19 vaccine candidate,” a spokesperson wrote.

The process with other vaccines, produced by BioNTech/Pfizer, Oxford/AstraZeneca and Moderna, has taken between two weeks and a month.

The Telegraph reported on Sunday that the MHRA would begin the approval process for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week, citing unnamed sources.

On February 16, the vaccine producer sent a formal conditional application to the European Medicines Agency, which could make a decision on March 11. The U.S. approved the vaccine this past weekend.

The U.K. has secured 30 million doses of the vaccine, with the option of purchasing an additional 22 million. The EU has secured up to 400 million doses.
