How to Create A Juneteenth Sensory Bin

Use acrylic paint to dye my chickpeas but if you don’t have acrylic paint you can use tempera paint or even food colouring however, if you use either it may transfer to your child’s hands during play. The method to dye chickpea is the same for which ever colouring tool you use.

Grab a bag a chickpeas and divide it into half and pour the dire chickpeas into separate ziplock bags. Add couple of squirts of red and blue and white paint, seal the bag and shake and massage until evenly disturbed. Open the bag and check the colour has been distributed evenly and add more paint as necessary.

Once your chickpeas have the desired colour, open the bag and spread our your chickpeas on a sheet of parchment paper or plastic bag to dry. Let the chickpeas air dry for about 1 hour (it may take more time). Once they are dry they are ready to play with!

How to Set up the Earth Day Sensory Bin with Coloured Chickpeas

How to Make a Fizzy Sun Sensory Bin: Summer STEAM

To make a fizzy sun you will need to create a yellow baking soda paste.

Fizzy Sun Sensory Bin: Summer STEAM

How to Make the Baking Soda Paste

  1. grab a mixing bowl
  2. add 2 cups of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of corn starch, 2 tablespoons of water and several drops of yellow food colouring.
  3. Mix until the you create a paste.

If it’s too stiff, add a small amount of water. If it is too watery add more baking soda and mix. Make sure your paste is not too watery as it will be harder to create the sun. When the paste is placed in the sensory bin it will start to spread out. If it is too watery your sun will change its shape before your little one can make it fizzy.

Make the Sun

Take your spoon and start to create the sun in your sensory bin by spooning out a large amount for the center of the sun. Place it in the center of the sensory bin.

Take smaller amount of the paste and create the flares of the sun. Only use a small amount as the paste spreads out as it sits.

Pour some vinegar into a bowl and hand your little one an eye dropper and invite them to squeeze the vinegar onto the summer. It will create a really cool fizzing sound and action as the vinegar reacts with baking soda. The fizz looks like solar flares!

What to Talk About:

Fizzy Sun Sensory Bin: Summer STEAM
  • Discuss the chemical reaction behind the combination of baking soda and vinegar: When you combine baking soda (a base) with vinegar (an acid), it releases a gas (carbon dioxide). Ask them what they see, hear and smell.
  • Ask them what they think will happen when they squeeze the vinegar on the sun.
  • As they squeeze the vinegar, ask what is happening. Let them describe what it sounds, smells and even feels like, what is happening, what it sounds/looks/feels like, what the solution smells like to them. See whether they can guess what it is.
