Kvyat was hoping for 'a few more crazy things' at Mugello

The Tuscan Grand Prix was a three-part chaotic affair, but Daniil Kvyat would have liked "a few more crazy things" to happen to help him improve on his P7 finish.

Kvyat cycled his way through and around the mayhem to secure his fourth top-ten finish of the 2020 season, his best year-to-date, thanks to a solid drive.

But the AlphaTauri charger, who also finished in the points at Monza, was hoping that circumstances would luck him into an even better result.

"I think it was important for the team to score some good points," Kvyat said.

"I’m quite pleased with the result, pleased with my driving, and pleased with the work of the team on such a hard day.

"It was a very complicated race for everyone, always starting and stopping, big risks, the strategy calls were all right.

"The car was doing an OK job so I’m quite happy with a good amount of points for the team.

"It was very important [to stay out of trouble]. Of course I was hoping for a few more crazy things to happen – a bit like the last race! – but there was nothing that really happened really big like the last race where we could capitalise and push our luck a bit more. But nevertheless, I’m grateful."

Kvayt says AlphaTauri delivered a flaw less performance at Mugello, one that has now put the Faenza-based squad within just 13 points of fellow Italian outfit Ferrari.

"As a team and as a driver we didn’t do any mistakes and it was very easy to do one. We took the maximum amount of points we could, so I’m quite happy and positive about it.

"You need to be as cool as you can. It’s hard. It’s easy to get emotional, but the key was to stay as cold all the time. It was very hard for everyone, very easy to make a mistake.

"Tricky conditions, three race starts, so it feels in a way like I did three races. It was honestly a very difficult race. Three starts and a lot of concentration all the time.

"Every time there is a very high risk it’s tricky, but I think we achieved a very good result. I’m very happy with seventh place, good points, we took points away from Ferrari which was our target. It’s cool."

Mercedes: Bottas plan for split strategy foiled by tyre concerns

Mercedes has revealed that Valtteri Bottas' request to be put on a different strategy than teammate Lewis Hamilton midway through the Tuscan Grand Prix was ultimately denied because of concerns over the integrity of the W11's tyres.

Bottas was trailing Hamilton at the mid-way point of the 59-lap race and believed that only an alternate strategy would provide him with a chance of beating the six-time world champion.

While Mercedes was initially more than happy to comply with Bottas' wish, the plan was changed on a whim and the Finn was brought in first. when the team bought the Finn in first.

Chief strategist James Vowles detailed the reason behind that decision.

“Towards lap 30 of the race, both cars were on medium and going into their stint,” Vowles said in Mercedes’ latest post-race debrief.

“We expected to stop just one more time before the end of the race. We started to notice lap 29, lap 30, that there was a vibration on Valtteri’s front tyres that was getting more and more significant.

“It was reminiscent of what we saw at Silverstone and this time we wanted to prevent any incident from occurring.

“As a result of that, instead of boxing Lewis first, because he had priority [as the car ahead], we brought Valtteri in.

“We reviewed what the best compound would be to fit that circumstance. Given the degradation on the medium tyres was higher than expected and given that this stint was slightly shorter than what we wanted it to be, and that we had a lead to the field, we went for the hard tyre.

“Prior to that, what we were going to do was stop Lewis first and whatever tyre we would have fitted, we would have been more than happy to do something different with Valtteri.

“But Valtteri’s stop wasn’t a planned stop. This was us reacting to a problem and as a result of it we stayed on the safe side.”

Bottas heads to Russia next week with a 55-point deficit to Hamilton in the Drivers' championship.
