Linda Kaumphawi: No butts…quit smoking with the help of cloves

The lockdown has not been easy for smokers due to the prohibition on the sale of tobacco products. Many were hoping they would be able to buy cigarettes again under the new Level 4 lockdown regulations, but to their dismay Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the ban will remain in place

Of course, this decision was not welcomed by many a smoker, while others are more than happy with the decision because at least they will be able to quit smoking after a long time of trying to curb their habit.

Clove the answer to kick smoking habit

However, we can’t deny that smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to overcome. For those who are trying to quit smoking, clove could be the answer.

According to Jay Manrique from www.hispanickitchen.com: “The main active compound found in clove is eugenol, which has anesthetic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The chemical has been extensively used in dental care since it relieves tooth-related pain and improves the symptoms of gingivitis (swelling of the gums) and other dental conditions”.

Something to chew on…

Clove has helped many quit smoking. It helps you control your urge to smoke. It also acts as munchers, which means you can put a clove in your mouth whenever you feel like having something to chew. Over a period of time, you will be able to control your urge fully and quit successfully.

All you have to do is, chew it slowly, or place a drop of clove oil on your finger and in back of the tongue. Its strong tastes significantly helps with the nicotine cravings.

Where there is a will there is a way

Even though cloves can help you in quitting smoking, the first requirement is that you have to have a desire to quit from smoking. If you have no desire to quit or or you’re  quitting because someone wants you to quit then you will only try without your heart in it. And that won’t work.

If you’re seriously trying to quit smoking, then make sure on your next grocery shopping you get clove or clove oil.

Taste of Thailand: Beef massaman curry

Massaman curry is a traditional Thai dish that comes from the south of Thailand. What makes this curry different from other curries is that it is a fusion between Thai and Indian style curry. The addition of cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg give it that distinct flavour.

An essential ingredient in a massaman curry is roasted peanuts, which add an extra layer of richness and texture to the curry.

If you want a quick and easy dinner, you can use store bought curry paste. If you can’t find massaman curry paste, you can simply use red curry paste which is also readily available. However if you feel up to the challenge, making your own curry paste packs this dish with flavour.
