Liverpool or Spurs are the mystery bidders for Arsenal target

There have been claims in Italy that Liverpool or Spurs are the unnamed club in the mix for Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli.

Locatelli’s performances at Euro 2020 – where he scored two goals for champions Italy – and for Sassuolo in Serie A, has led to interest from a number of suitors this summer.

but reports have claimed that Locatelli would prefer to stay in Serie A and move to Turin.

Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has confirmed that Juventus and Arsenal remain interested in Locatelli but he revealed there is one unnamed Premier League side in for the midfielder.

“On Friday we will talk with Juve, it is not certain that we will meet but we will do so soon and in the next few days, time is running out,” Carnevali told Sky Italia.

“There is also a discussion with Arsenal and another English club.”

That has led to a couple of reports claiming that they know the identity of the mystery English club.

insist that the ‘club that Carnevali referred to’ is Tottenham, meaning Juventus’ road to signing Locatelli has just become ‘more complicated’.

) reckons that Liverpool are the unnamed club after Sassuolo received a ‘mega offer’ from an English club.

The report adds that ‘many clues lead to Liverpool’ as the Italian newspapers try to work out the identity of the secret bidders.

Meanwhile, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks it’s “incredible” how much money Liverpool have raked in from sales of their former academy players.

Robinson told Football Insider: “It’s incredible.

“It just goes to show that investing in your academy is worth it, it pays off. To get that kind of money for players that are not deemed good enough for your club is just remarkable. It’s an incredible return on your investment.

“The top-class coaches and facilities at the academy are paying dividends.

“Players are giving a grounding at a club like Liverpool. If you go there you have a really good chance of making a long career in football.”

West Ham should avoid signing ‘awful’ Man Utd defender, says ex-player

West Ham United will “go backwards” if they sign “awful” footballers like Manchester United’s Phil Jones, according to Frank McAvennie.

Jones has been a player since 2011. He has played 224 times for them across all competitions since then.

But he has fallen down the pecking order and he has struggled with injuries in recent years. After only playing eight times in 2019/20, he did not play once for the Red Devils last term.

Earlier this week, reported that West Ham were interested in signing Jones.

Ex-Hammers striker McAvennie has encouraged his former club to avoid signing him. He has told  that Jones is “all over the place” as a centre-back:

“Not for me. He is not like our players.

“West Ham challenged for the Champions League spots last season.

“They have to kick on this summer. We can’t go backwards signing players like Jones.

“He’s awful, all over the place in defence.”

“Whether it’s just and Manchester United saying the right things to keep the transfer fee high. The moment you say he’s surplus to requirements you annoy the player and devalue him very, very quickly because everybody knows you want to get rid of him.

“I said this when he went to West Ham and started playing well, Ole said ‘Oh, he was brilliant with us, he’d been training well and looking sharp’. Why did you let him go out on loan then?

“He didn’t take time to get going, he hit the ground immediately. If he was sharp in training and looking after himself like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer squad, why was he not in and around the Man United squad?

“Suddenly, he’s gone out and done well and now he’s back in. There was no reason to send him out on loan in the first place, if that was the case.

“I think this is a little bit of a bluff. They want to keep up appearances, ‘We want to keep him. If you want him, you’re going to have to prise him away rather than us give him away’.”
