Lukaku to return for Chelsea ‘earlier than planned’, says agent

Romelu Lukaku will return for Chelsea “earlier than planned” after suffering an ankle injury in the Champions League win over Malmo, according to his agent Federico Pastorello.

Thomas Tuchel, who said before the game that Lukaku was fatigues having been “overplayed”, said that he and fellow striker Timo Werner will be out “for a while”.

Lukaku limped off after Lasse Nielsen’s challenge in the box that won Chelsea a penalty.

It’s a setback for the former Inter Milan star, who has recently struggled to find the net for the Blues after four goals in his opening four appearances.

Pastorello told Sky Sports News: “I was very worried because Romelu is a player who really wants to play and the fact he stayed lying on the pitch so long after the penalty, it doesn’t look good to me because he is someone who immediately stands up.

“The fact he was down for four minutes, I was with Petr Cech and I told him while watching the game that it was something I was scared about because he isn’t one to make a fake scene.

“When he stood up I thought it is not a good sign and now we are waiting for the exams so we will know something more soon.

“But if you see the pictures and the video of the injury, the position of the ankle is really under the weight of the body but he is a strong boy and he wants so much to play every game so he will be back stronger soon I am sure.

“He was very sad actually yesterday as a first reaction but everybody was seeing he was playing a good game and I am 100 per cent sure he would have scored goals [had he stayed on].

“He was on fire but he is really concentrated and will be focused on his recovery as soon as possible.

“He has his physio at home so he is working hard every evening even before he goes to sleep so if there is a time to come back it will be earlier than planned.”

Vitesse 1-0 Tottenham: Under par Spurs beaten in Europe

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham underperformed as they were deservedly beaten in the Europa Conference League by Vitesse.

Santo made eleven changes for this game and they were beaten via Maximilian Wittek’s 78th-minute strike.

Bryan Gil hit the crossbar in the second half but this was the closest that Spurs came to scoring.

Last time played in Holland they enjoyed one of the most famous nights in their history as Lucas Moura’s hat-trick against Ajax sent them through to the Champions League final.

This time the Johan Cruijff Arena was nothing but a stop on the trainline between Amsterdam and Arnhem and that Moura miracle must seem a long time ago as Spurs now compete in the third tier of European football.

Nuno has shown the competition respect so far, but made it clear where his priorities lay, leaving the entire XI that played 90 minutes at Newcastle last weekend at home to train ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to the Hammers.

With the return fixture in a fortnight and then a trip to the weakest team in the competition NS Mura to come, the Portuguese decided that leaving his big guns back in London for this game was a risk worth taking.

It was a gamble because this was a big night for Vitesse, who sold out their GelreDome stadium for the first time in seven years.

Before kick-off their partisan fans held up a banner reading “For the city, the colours and our club: This is our night” and, fresh from a derby win over NEC Nijmegen at the weekend, they started with intent.

Nikolai Baden Frederiksen forced Pierluigi Gollini into a save with his feet after being played in in the third minute and then Jacob Rasmussen flashed a header just wide from a corner.

Unsurprisingly given the amount of changes, Spurs were not up to much in an attacking sense in the first half, with teenage striker Dane Scarlett up against it in a lone role in attack.

They immediately showed more after the break and were within inches of taking the lead in the 47th minute.

Giovani Lo Celso showed why he is becoming a key player for Argentina as he went on an enterprising dribble before laying it off for Gil, whose first-time shot rattled the crossbar.

That was as good as it got for Spurs who were pinned further and further back as the second half wore on, with Eli Dasa twice going close with efforts from distance, the second effort bringing a smart stop out of Gollini.

It was no surprise when the goal came 12 minutes from time as Wittek brilliantly volleyed home Dasa’s cross from the edge of the area to send the home crowd wild.
