Machine Gun Kelly Knew He’d Have Many Career Paths When He ‘Wanted to Be a Jedi’

The stars aligned for rapper, actor and director Machine Gun Kelly, who was inspired by Star Wars when understanding his destiny as a multi-hyphenate star.

The 30-year-old sat down for an interview with Radio.com’s DTS Sound Space on Sunday (March 7) and performed “Tickets to My Downfall,” “Concert For Aliens,” “My Ex’s Best Friend,” and “Bloody Valentine” from his Billboard 200 No. 1 album Tickets to My Downfall. He opened up about the moment he realized his path was multifaceted when he found himself idolizing and imitating movie characters and musicians.

“I realized when I would watch movies and go to school trying to be like characters in movies. That was when I realized I didn’t have a solid foundation in my home life to follow after, so I was just idolizing whoever who was in my headphones or was in front of me in the TV or magazines,” he said, specifically noting that it dawned on him that he’d have multiple paths “when I wanted to be a Jedi.”

Within the last two years, MGK has portrayed Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee in the 2019 Netflix drama The Dirt, dropped a chart-topping pop-punk album in 2020, and directed the LP’s accompanying musical film. But he said recording his fifth album, Tickets, was the “first example” of him focusing on one project since he hasn’t “accessed that part of my patience yet.”

“The cool thing about that in regards to what the future holds is that I haven’t done that yet. So I haven’t focused all of my energy into one thing yet,” the “Bloody Valentine” artist said. “Even if you think I’m good at multiple, I haven’t yet given the world a version of me where I only focus on directing or acting or just music because it seems like I just haven’t accessed that part of my patience yet. So I’m excited for that to open up.”
