Man jailed over 'ferocious' stabbing death of Melbourne mother

A man who stabbed a Melbourne mother to death and attacked a widow will spend at least 36 years behind bars.

Scott Alan Murdoch admitted stabbing Kylie Blackwood in a "ferocious" murder and leaving widow Ilona Prohaska for dead in 2013.

The attacks on the women happened while Murdoch was on parole for an earlier attack of another female in her home.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Jane Dixon today handed Murdoch a life sentence with a non-parole period of 36 years, making him 78 before he is eligible for parole.
