Man Utd star thanks Mourinho for ‘making him a winner’

Man Utd star Jesse Lingard has suggested that Jose Mourinho “made [him] a winner” during their time together at Old Trafford.

was Man Utd boss for around two-and-a-half years up until the end of 2018. The former Chelsea boss won the double at United during the 2016/17 season. This came as he guided them to win the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

Lingard was a mainstay for the Red Devils during this period. He played 42 times for them during the 2016/17 campaign.

The Englishman has not won a trophy at since then. He has enjoyed a good start to the 2021/22 season after his fruitful spell on loan at West Ham United.

As reported by the , Lingard has stated that Mourinho would “bring out” the winning mentality in his players:

“Me and Jose had a good relationship generally, though, I have to say. He was good to me. Before all the injury stuff, he trusted me, put me in for important games. We won trophies and he made me a winner. He could just bring out that side in you.

“He also liked to have a personal connection with his players. Sometimes I’d look at my phone and I’d be getting a random FaceTime from him. Just out of nowhere — just to check in.

“I used to find it so strange at first. He’d call and be like, ‘Hey Jesse, what are you doing?’

“And I’d be like, ‘Erm, just chilling, watching TV… (awkward silence)… what are you doing?’

“Hahaha! I found it funny. And, to be fair, it showed how much he cared about us.”

“I would be going to try and make a mad couple of signings.

“Raheem Sterling’s not playing regular. I would go and ask him the question. I would go and ask Declan Rice. What’s going on?

“Them two would be the first two on my list. And I will go all out to get them. Then I would go all out to get Jesse Lingard.”

Premier League boss flattered by Arsenal links but he’s ‘insanely happy’

Thomas Frank has insisted that he is “insanely happy” at Premier League newcomers Brentford even though he is flattered by reports linking him to Arsenal.

Frank has been Brentford boss since 2018. He stepped in to replace Dean Smith, who left the club to join Aston Villa.

The 47-year-old led them to the Championship play-off final in 2018/19. They missed out on promotion to the Premier League as Fulham beat them at Wembley.

The Bees made this right last season as they got the better of Swansea City to earn promotion via the play-offs.

Brentford have made a strong start to the new Premier League season. They have three wins, three draws and just one defeat.

This start leaves them seventh in the Premier League after seven games. reported last month that were interested in Frank should they decide to part with .

Frank has told Danish outlet that despite these reports, he is “insanely happy” at Brentford:

“So, I understand that well, but… Arsenal and Man United. Wasn’t that how it was? I think I read that at some point,” Frank said.

“It’s very nice, but one thing is rumours, and the other is if they really wanted to contact me. Then we have to take it from there.

“I have a contact until 2023. I’m insanely happy at Brentford. [They are a] club that means a lot to me and where I have had great times.

“I enjoy working with our director of football, owners, players, staff and fans.

“It’s the club who must come to me, but now we must see what the future brings. I know we have a mutual respect and a good relationship with each other on that.”

“Arsenal are not going to be in the top four this season, they’re competing for fifth and sixth.

“They’re still in the hunt alongside Everton, West Ham, Spurs. West Ham are flying at the moment. I’ve had a bet that Arsenal will finish above both West Ham and Spurs.

“I think they’ll have a good season and I think you have to give Mikel Arteta time.

“It’s a situation where they’ve got to keep investing, they’ve invested a lot of money in the summer, whether it’s the right investment [remains to be seen]. I think the back four will be very important.

“I was with [former Arsenal manager] George Graham yesterday. If this Arsenal team can get that back four right like it was in his era, get the goalkeeper right. If you can keep the current back four fit and keep it solid. He might have a chance this year, Arteta.”
