Man Utd starlet signs new deal before leaving on loan

Man Utd youngster Di’Shon Bernard has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 20-year-old is a talented centre-back who has been part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pre-season camp.

He will now spend the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Championship side Hull City in an attempt to gain more experience.

Breakout: One fringe player per club who could emerge

Bernard becomes Grant McCann’s sixth summer signing at the KCOM stadium.

The Tigers have already brought in three players on free transfers, as well as Ryan Longman on loan from Brighton and Nathan Baxter on loan from .

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Bernard told BBC Radio Humberside: “I’m very excited to join Hull City and hopefully it can be a very successful season for us.

“They’re a big club, they used to be in the Premier League and hopefully they can get back to that spot and I can do my part to get them there.

“I think they (the fans) can expect me to be very aggressive, someone that’s good on the ball, brings the ball out, plays through the lines, very vocal.

“I’m a shot-blocker so they can expect a lot from me.”

McCann told Hull’s official website: “The fact he’s been in the Manchester United first team the past few weeks and been part of their pre-season plans shows how highly they think of him.

“From speaking to Michael Carrick, and one or two other people at Man Utd and Salford, I feel it’s a positive progression for the lad.

“He’s confident and got lots of qualities; he’s quick, good at handling the ball, aggressive in the way he plays, wants to play on the front foot and likes to drive forward.”

Bernard, who can also operate as a right-back if needed, has been at Man Utd since the age of 16.

He featured in the Red Devils’ pre-season friendlies against Derby County and QPR.

This is the second loan spell of the player’s career.

He spent last season at Salford and made 29 appearances in League Two, scoring two goals.

He helped the club to finish eighth in the table on 71 points.

Abraham ‘fits the bill’ as an Arsenal signing, says Winterburn

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn believes Tammy Abraham fits the profile of a potential signing for the club.

Abraham looks set to leave Chelsea this summer as the Blues continue their pursuit of Erling Haaland.

The Englishman made 22 Premier League appearances last term, scoring six goals, but was left out of the squad entirely on multiple occasions.

Breakout: One fringe player per club who could emerge

He’s been linked with a . Reports have suggested Arsenal are monitoring his situation and could make an offer if Chelsea decide to leave him leave.

Reacting to the news, Winterburn said (): “He certainly would fit the bill of recent Arsenal signings, young with a point to prove.

“People will question his consistency but what you want is for these young players to get a run in the team.

“Is he going to get a run in a team if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is playing well? Probably not unless Aubameyang can be switched to the left-hand side – although you then need to leave out either Nicolas Pepe or Bukayo Saka.

“With Abraham, there’s potential there and development for a young, young player. So, I think it’s an option [for] Arsenal, although with Alexandre Lacazette being linked with a move away, it could be just a name that has been thrown into a hat.”

Despite Lacazette scoring 17 goals in all competitions last season, it’s believed Arsenal are for just £15million.

have once again been tipped to sign him as part of their search for Luis Suarez’s new strike partner.

When asked about Lacazette, Winterburn continued: “Arsenal shouldn’t sell Lacazette unless they’ve got an upgrade in place. I wouldn’t let him go until we have secured another striker. I’ve said that all along.

“Lacazette is a different striker to anything Arsenal have at the club. When he’s in top form, he holds the ball up well, his link-up play is good.

“I suppose his strike rate is not the very, very best of what you want, but then we are not at the very, very top of the league either at the moment as well.

“So personally, at the moment, I don’t want to see him go, unless we’ve got someone coming in that’s going to excite me.

“I wouldn’t let him go and then we haven’t got anybody else to bring in. For me, that’s just way too risky.”
