Messi tells Barcelona he wants to leave…for free

Lionel Messi has informed Barcelona that he wishes to leave the club this summer.

The 33-year-old sent a fax to the LaLiga giants on Tuesday asking to have his contract terminated.

Messi came through the ranks at the Nou Camp having joined the famed La Masia academy and has won 33 major trophies and a record six Ballon d’Or titles.

Reports claim the Argentina international had a clause in his contract which, if activated, would allow him to walk away from the club for free.

While the suggestion is this clause expired in May, there are claims that Messi and his team believe it should be extended to cover the prolonged season – which ran until August following the delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It remains to be seen how Barcelona will respond to Messi’s request, with the club trying to rebuild following the appointment of Ronald Koeman as head coach.

Messi was part of the Barcelona side that was thrashed 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final, and speaking recently Koeman said he was looking forward to working with the forward.

“It is a pleasure to have a player like Messi in the team. His qualities will help the team to develop.” he told Barcelona’s official website.

Liverpool ‘haven’t contacted’ Bayern yet over Thiago move

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claims that Liverpool have yet to make contact with the German club over a move for Thiago Alcantara.

Thiago has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the summer, with some reports suggesting he had even  ahead of a move to Anfield

However, the Premier League champions have reservations over spending £23m or so on a 29-year-old with less than 12 months left on his Bayern Munich deal, particularly in the current economic climate.

And German newspaper Abendzeitung (via ) claim on Tuesday that Liverpool remains the ‘dream destination’ for the Spanish midfielder but that Liverpool still have to meet Bayern’s €30m plus asking price if a deal is to be concluded.

And Rummenigge has been talking to the press on Tuesday and says that Liverpool are yet to make contact, let alone make a bid.

“We always read a lot about Liverpool, but they haven’t contacted us yet,” Rummenigge told .

“Yesterday we had the meeting with our employees and his whole family was there, and they wandered around the square in great nostalgia [in the Allianz Arena], I would say. It looked a lot like goodbye, as if he had made up his mind.”
