Miss Universe: SA crossing fingers for Natasha Joubert

In less than 24 hours, the new Miss Universe will be crowned and South Africans are hoping their very own Natasha Joubert will claim the title.

The 2020 Miss Universe pageant is set to be held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Hollywood, Florida on 16 May.

Joubert will compete against 73 other beauty queens for the coveted title. The 23-year-old is already a hit with South Africans, who are rooting for her every step of the way. She represented the country in the Miss Universe preliminary competition on Friday, 14 May.

She has a BCom degree in marketing management and was born and raised in Centurion, Pretoria.

The current Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, has held the title for two years, and will crown her successor in the event.

There were questions as to why current Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida was not automatically entered into the global competition. However it was announced in December 2020 that the pageant’s top 3 contestants would each take part in different global beauty competitions.

Musida will take part in the Miss World pageant, while Thato Mosehle, the first runner-up, will represent South Africa in the Miss Supranational pageant. Joubert was the second runner-up in the competition.

Where can we watch the Miss Universe pageant?

South Africans hoping to watch the Miss Universe pageant can do so, as it will air live on 17 May on DStv’s 1 Magic, channel 103.

It will run from 02:00 until 05:00. If you happen to miss it, no worries – the pageant will be repeated at 21:30 on the same day.

The event will be hosted by actor Mario Lopez and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo.

Should Natasha Joubert win the title, this would be the pageant’s second consecutive win for a country, in its history. Other South Africans to win the pageant are Demi-Leigh Nel and Margaret Gardiner.

Ahead of the competition, South Africans have been showing Joubert some love and wishing her luck on Twitter, here’s what some had to say.
