Moyes praise for West Ham star ‘head and shoulders above anyone else’

West Ham manager David Moyes was full of praise for midfielder Declan Rice after his impressive performance in their victory over Everton on Sunday.

between the two sides after a frustrating afternoon in front of goal for both sides.

Moyes, formerly of Everton, spoke about how the side likes to use set-pieces to their advantage and picked out one man in particular who impressed him.

Speaking to , Moyes explained: “I was annoyed as I felt our earlier play had warranted more goals or clearer chances but credit to Everton as they defended their box well and we didn’t perhaps show enough in the final third. I always felt it would be a tough, tight game throughout.

“Nowadays, as a modern trend everyone has got a set-piece coach and we’ve got players who want to head the ball which makes a difference. [Angelo] Ogbonna, Issa Diop, Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma all like to get their heads on the ball and then you need someone who can provide the delivery and Jarrod [Bowen] certainly did that today.

“I want the team to challenge and I want them to play and try to get us a victory wherever we go. We’ve got a good team and we’ve been playing well.

“Before today in the last few games, we’ve not done enough in the final third but we managed to get the win today.

“It would be hard to say just how good Declan Rice was today. For me, he was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch. He did the dirty bits in the game when he had to do so but had a great air of control on the ball and poise.”

Matchwinner Ogbonna also spoke to Sky, revealing how important the win was.

“It was so important today because we wanted to bounce back from the last game.” said Ogbonna.

“I think it was very, very important [to win]. We kept a clean sheet and got what we deserved today.

“It was a totally hard game, but I think the players in the middle of the park, like Tomas [Souček] and Dec [Rice], played fantastically. They helped us to keep a clean sheet.”

Bruce criticises defensive showing, vows to ‘carry on’ until told not to

Steve Bruce has criticised his Newcastle sides defensive display after their 3-2 loss at home to Tottenham, the first game in front of the clubs new owners.

a game that was marred by serious medical incident in the crowd.

Goals from Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son cancelled out Callum Wilson’s opener and Eric Dier’s late own goal as Newcastle failed to earn their first win of the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bruce revealed what is letting the side down.

“We were beaten by the better team after a wonderful start.

“Problems that we’ve had for a while now defensively were there for all to see unfortunately.

“We’ve started a few games like that, we’ve got off to a good start and scored, got our noses in front, unfortunately we’re not able to defend well enough as a team.

“From front to back at the moment, we’re not defending well enough. We’ve tried to change, to be more on the front-foot if that’s the right word you say these days, but it’s difficult because you get yourself having to score three goals to win a match.”

Bruce also praised the clubs supporters, medical staff and players after the incident that saw the game temporarily suspended in the first half.

“Everybody in the ground deserves credit. I hear the man is okay, thankfully, so it puts things in to perspective a little bit.

“It looks like good news, so I’m delighted for his family.”

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Steve Bruce’s tenure at the club since the recent takeover of the club and it appears likely that this could be managers last game in charge of the north-east club.

When asked if he will remain in his current post, Bruce admitted: “That is for other people to decide. Ever since I have walked into this club of ours it is difficult. I knew how difficult it was going to be with the frustrations. I will carry on as best I can until I hear otherwise.

“The owners have conducted themselves respectfully since they came in. As long as I hear otherwise, I will go into work tomorrow.”
