News in a Minute: Meet The New Miss Universe – Andrea Meza

Look out world, we have a new crowned queen and her name is Andrea Meza.

Meza was crowned by South Africa’s very own Zozibini Tunzi during the pageant’s finale in Hollywood, Florida in the early hours of Monday morning, 17 May 2021.

Tunzi held the Miss Universe title for two years, as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had prompted organisers to postpone the competition by a year.

WHO IS ANDREA MEZA?

The new Miss Universe Andrea Meza is 27 years old and grew up in Chihuahua City. She has a degree in software engineering from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua.

Meza had previously been Mexicana Universal 2020 and Miss Mexico 2017. She was also the first runner-up at the Miss World Competition in 2017.

Her Miss Universe win makes her the third Mexican woman to claim the crown, following Lupita Jones and Ximena Navarrete.

Hijacking: Now Brave Uber driver fights back, gang arrested

Police crime intelligence officers swooped on the three suspects who were also wanted for an earlier hijacking in another part of the city.

Hijacking: Now Brave Uber driver fights back, gang arrested

A quick thinking Uber driver who single handedly fought back against a gang of hijackers had no idea that his brave actions during this weekend’s hijacking would lead to the arrest of wanted suspects.

KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said that Durban Central police and provincial crime intelligence members were busy with crime prevention duties in the central business district when they were alerted to the hijacking in progress. The hijacking incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Saturday night.

“They received an information about the attempted hijacking that was taking place in Castle Hill Road, Newlands West whereby  three men had  tried to hijack  an Uber driver,” Mbele said.

She said one of the suspects was armed with a firearm.

“The victim retaliated by stabbing the suspects with a sharp object, which resulted in the suspects fleeing  into a nearby bush,” she said.

Mbele said that two of the suspects had sustained severe stab wounds.

“While searching for the suspects the members received information that the suspects that were injured were proceeding to a hospital in town,” Mbele said.

Mbele said that upon further investigation the police established that the three suspects were also wanted for another hijacking that they had allegedly committed in Inanda last month.

“The team  proceeded to the hospital where three suspects were arrested, one was found with no injuries and two were seriously injured. A firearm with serial number filed off was recovered,” Mbele said.

Mbele said that the two injured suspects were currently still in hospital  under police guard, where they were receiving medical treatment for their injuries

She said the suspects were expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon to face the two charges of attempted hijacking.
