Norris rues 'small but costly' mistake in FP2

Lando Norris says he was lucky to escape unscathed a crash in Friday's second practice that "felt a lot worse" in the car that it looked from the outside.

Norris, who set the eight fastest time in FP1, ran wide at Mugello's tight right-hand Turn 3 corner and put his left-hand wheels in the gravel, a mishap that sent him spinning into the barrier.

The 20-year-old radioed in to signal that all was fine with the exception of the McLaren's damaged front end, but the incident brought his day of running to an early end.

"It felt a lot worse when I was in the car than what it looks like," Norris explained.

"I think there is some damage a bit to the steering and maybe the rear, but nothing major luckily. I don’t think I damaged too much the floor or the wings, apart from the front wing obviously.

"It’s not terrible, it could have been worse, so I’m lucky. But it was a small mistake from my side which was quite costly, cost me all of the high-fuel running in FP2.

"It is what it is, and I need to try and make up for it tomorrow."

Mugello's lack of run-off areas leaves little margin for error, but Norris is already a fan of the challenging Tuscan track.

"It’s fast, good fun, very tricky," he commented.

"The tarmac here seems very slippery, so a lot of people are struggling and so are we. We were expecting to be quite a bit quicker than what we are doing, just because we were expecting the track to be much grippier.

"It feels quite slippery with the tyres we have, and it makes our life very difficult in the car and for the mechanics and engineers to set up the car.

"It’s probably a bit trickier than we were expecting, but it’s a good challenge in this car, very fast, very high speed. Quite physical but it’s a good, fun challenge."

Hamilton just 'not that great' yet around Mugello

Lewis Hamilton admits he's still coming to grips with Mugello's challenging layout, but insists there is "plenty to come" after Friday's opening day of running.

Hamilton clocked in fourth in FP1, half a second adrift from teammate Valtteri Bottas, a gap that the six-time world champion reduced to 0.207s in the afternoon session in which his teammate was once again the pacesetter.

As he got acquainted with this weekend's new venue, the Briton has already taken a liking to Mugello's challenges which he expects to get on top of tomorrow.

"I like it, it’s fast," Hamilton said. "It’s definitely a real challenge, just I’m not that great at it just yet, but I’m working on it.

"I’m trying to push it to the limit. I think there are sections like the last sector, I’ve got that sorted and pretty happy with that.

"The first and second sector are a little bit weak for me, but particularly the first sector. There’s plenty to come in that section.

"Max and Valtteri are very quick through there so I’ll do a lot of studying tonight and hopefully I’ll rectify that tomorrow."

Unsurprisingly, the current leader of the F1 world championship confirmed Mugello's physically challenging characteristics.

"It almost feels like Turkey, the triple left hander whatever it is there, it is incredibly fast through the first, 6, 7, 8, 9, it’s intense," he said.

"I have to say it’s amazing to experience it. It’s going to be difficult to look after the tyres through that section but everyone is in the same boat.

"On the long run it’s one of the most physically demanding circuits that we’ve been at for a while, particularly with those double right-handers, most of the time we’re flat out through those sections, and it’s just holding your neck the whole time. I love that."
