O’Donnell distracted Grealish by paying him compliments

Scotland right-back Stephen O’Donnell has revealed the bizarre way in which he attempted to distract Jack Grealish in Friday’s 0-0 draw with England.

O’Donnell, who plays his club football with Motherwell, was one of the standout performers as the Tartan Army secured a memorable result at Wembley, typifying a display full of spirit and quality.

England’s feted attackers , with Grealish unable to alter the course of proceedings following his introduction from the bench in the 63rd minute.

Speaking on , O’Donnell has now suggested that the Villa captain’s lack of influence could have in part been down to his unusual method of unsettling him, which involved flattering him with compliments.

The defender claimed the idea was John McGinn’s: “I was just getting a wee bit fed up at that stage of the game, he’d just come on, he was nice and fresh.

“Normally when the fresh wingers come on that’s when you’re a bit tired so I thought ‘I just need to hit him here’, because I was getting fed up of him trying to take the mick out of me so I gave him a wee hit.

“Thankfully John McGinn had given me some tips, he said if he comes on you need to be nibbling in his ear but don’t be critical, be complimentary.

“So the full time he was on I was telling him how good-looking he was and I love his calves and asking him how he got his hair to look like that.

“He (McGinn) said if you tell him he’s hopeless or kick him really, really hard, he gets up and gives it back at you. Maybe that was the advantage over Jack Grealish the other night.”

The point keeps Scotland’s chances of progressing into the knockout stages alive, though only a win against Croatia will suffice.

“For us it was pleasing to get something out of the game but, to reiterate, it was to get something out of the game to give ourselves a chance going into the game on Tuesday,” Scotland boss Steve Clarke told .

“All our focus is now on that and trying to make sure we can create a little bit more history for the country.”

‘We need to create chances for him’ – Trippier on Kane struggle

Kieran Trippier believes England can help Harry Kane to score by creating more chances for the Tottenham striker.

Kane has had a poor start to Euro 2020 and is yet to register a single shot on target for the Three Lions.

He was hauled off by Gareth Southgate during the .

Speaking about Kane, Trippier told a press conference: “With H, he works so hard for the team and people might not recognise what he does off the ball.

“I believe in and I know he will score goals, Harry’s chances will come.

“Harry has had an unbelievable season with Spurs. He is working hard in training and it is about getting the chances to him.

“He is our captain, our leader, a big player for us and we just need to create chances for him to score goals. We need to get him on the end of chances.”

in the aftermath of the Scotland draw. They were seen lacking expansive football and were outplayed by their rivals for much of the game.

However, Trippier remains positive about his team’s chances in the tournament.

The full-back continued: “Two clean sheets, four points on the board, we know we can do better (but) we are on four points, in a good position.

“Everyone is feeling good and calm and everyone is looking forward to the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

“We are in a good position. We have to look forward to Tuesday and get the three points.”

Trippier was left on the bench against the Scots. He began Euro 2020 by playing at left-back in the .

Speaking about his game time so far, the former man said: “Luke (Shaw) and Chilly (Ben Chilwell) have had fantastic seasons. Even when I played left-back, Luke and Chilly were helping me.

“We have got a really good squad. Nobody was complaining. In tournament football everyone needs to be there for each other. If I play left-back I will give 110 per cent. The most important thing is the team.

“I have not played loads of games at left-back but I feel I am experienced enough to play on either side. If I am playing, no matter what position, I will always give 110 per cent.

“I don’t mind playing left or right, it doesn’t bother me.”

England face the Czech Republic in their final group match on Tuesday at 20:00.
