Brighton boss Graham Potter has suggested that the club could exercise its right to block Percy Tau and other internationals from leaving the club for international duty later this month.

Potter said that the club has sought clarification from Fifa on what their options would be at this time.

“I think we are going to speak about it over the next few days and the upcoming week maybe with a bit more clarity from FIFA or whoever else can give us that information, Potter said.

“But we will take the decision as a club, which is right for the players and for us and what we can do.”

Premier League rages over quarantine threat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp led a chorus of Premier League managers in suggesting that if players will be forced into quarantine upon returning from countries on the United Kingdom’s red list, then clubs should be able to block the spell.

Brighton are currently just three points above the relegation zone but have not actually utilised Tau since their FA Cup fifth round defeat to Leicester City on 10 February.

Tau has been an unused substitute in each the Seagulls last eight Premier League appearances but it seems Potter hasn’t ruled out further use of the South African forward.

A growing number of football followers in South Africa have questioned Brighton’s decision to recall Tau from his third loan spell in Belgium only to use him to warm the bench.

Potter indicated that Brighton will make a decision on Tau and others during the course of the next week.

“It seems sensible to me [that clubs should be able to decide] in terms of what we have just come out of and that type of movement, and then to have a ten-day quarantine doesn’t make a lot of sense. But like I said, we will speak about it next week and then we will know for sure.”
