The Bafana Bafana international has already spent all of three seasons playing football in Belgium, having previously been sent on various loan spells to the country by Brighton. Now if recent reports are anything to go by, it would appear that Tau’s frustrating six-month spell with the Seagulls, may have been his last and effectively a goodbye to the club and Premier League.

Royal Antwerp believed to be close to agreeing fee for Tau

According to Belgian football publication Voetbalkrant, Belgium topflight side Royal Antwerp are close to agreeing a deal with Brighton that will see Tau return to the Pro League. The publication goes as far as saying Antwerp have offered a fee of €4 million (R66 million) for Tau’s services, a fee they definitely feel will be sufficient to convince Brighton to part ways with the silky winger.

Brighton believed to be willing to do business at that price

The publication claims that Brighton is eager to facilitate the move, as when Tau got his chance, the Premier League proved a step up too big for him.

“According to our information, Antwerp will definitively pluck the winger from Brighton & Hove Albion. The South African Tau got his chance at The Eagles after the turn of the year, but it soon turned out that the Premier League is too ambitious,” a translated paragraph from the publication read.

Antwerp long-term admirers of Tau

It also adds that Tau has been a long-term target for Antwerp who were after his services as far back as the beginning of the recently concluded season before a conversation with legendary former Manchester City and Belgium national team Vincent Kompany swayed Tau into the direction of league giants RSC Anderlecht.

It is also reported that Antwerp went as far as offering Brighton the same amount of money they’re offering now for a permanent move last summer, but the club rejected their bid in the hopes of obtaining €6 million. It is now thought that Brighton recognises the current financial climate affecting football clubs and are willing to accept that amount for Tau this summer to sanction a permanent sale.

These news comes as a complete bombshell, and if proven to be true, they would be going against all of the positive noises from both Brighton CEO Paul Barber as well as Tau himself. In recent weeks the duo have been very vocal about Tau’s future in the South Coast, with Barber stating Tau will get his chance eventually, while “The Lion of Judah” himself has vehemently stated that he will be staying to fight for his place at the team.

Is Tau’s future at Brighton or will this move materialise?

Watch the space!
