‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Producer Unsure Of Johnny Depp’s Involvement In New Sequel

Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer is unsure of what involvement Johnny Depp will have in the upcoming sequel.

The history of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one that is as chaotic as it was successful. The initial film was one that fought a constant uphill battle to be made but eventually turned into one of the year’s best films and helped turn star Johnny Depp into one of Hollywood’s biggest names. Unfortunately the success of both the franchise and it’s star have wained in the 17 years since its release.

‘Black Widow’ Star Discusses Rumors About Playing Taskmaster

The film’s first three sequels were all massive money makers but failed to wow the critics the same way the first film had. The film’s latest entry,
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was the lowest-grossing of these sequels and was panned by critics. While a 6th film is in development, it will reportedly be a reboot of the franchise. Whether or not the franchise will continue without Johnny Depp, however, is a question that no one seems able to answer.

While speaking to Collider, the subject of the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot was brought up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In it, he revealed that they had been working on a draft for a new film and had been at it for quite some time:

“We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”

Later on, he admitted that they weren’t sure what role Johnny Depp would have in the upcoming Pirates film:

“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be. So, we’re going to have to see.”

Universal’s ‘Scarface’ Reboot Adds Director Luca Guadagnino

The long-awaited Scarface reboot from Universal has found its director in Luca Guadagnino of Call Me by Your Name fame.

The Scarface franchise is one that is incredibly iconic and influential despite only having two real installments. The original film was released in 1932 and told the story of mobster Antonio “Tony” Camonte rise through the ranks of Chicago’s organized crime. Perhaps better known is the 1983 remake starring Al Pachino which told the story of the rise and fall drug lord Tony Montana. The latter of the two has, of course, become a staple in pop culture thanks to its iconic dialog and extreme violence. But now Universal wants to give the Scarface story a modern treatment.

The Scarface reboot has been in development since 2011 and has had a number of creative teams attached to it. Originally the film was set to be written by Suicide Squad director David Ayer and helmed by David Yates who was best known for his work on the Harry Potter films. This did not pan out and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua went into talks to direct the reboot with Diego Luna of  Narcos: Mexico and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story fame to star in the film. Now it seems that Fuaqa has vacated the director’s chair in favor of Luca Guadagnino.

Luca Guadagnino has directed a number of shorts and documentaries but is perhaps best know for his work on the Oscar-winning film, Call Me by Your Name. The latest version of the script was written by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, although it is unknown if this is the version that will be used for the Scarface reboot. Dylan Clark, who also produced the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy, is set to produce the upcoming Universal reboot.
