Pundit questions Man Utd recruitment as Solskjaer’s side is ‘unbalanced’

Joe Cole has questioned the recruitment of Man Utd as he claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is currently “a tad unbalanced”.

The Red Devils were busy in the transfer market during the summer. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane were among their summer recruits.

Ronaldo has scored two late winners in the Champions League group stages for Man Utd this term.

On Wednesday night, United came back from 2-0 down to beat Italian side Atalanta at Old Trafford.

After that game (as reported by ), Cole said that Man Utd are still “unbalanced” despite their summer signings:

“It’s an interesting project at Man United because they’ve obviously shown a lot of belief in Ole, and in his processes,” said Cole.

“He’s been given so much now, the squad is there – I think still a tad unbalanced, I think they’d like to be stronger in the middle of the park.

“They’ve added probably the greatest player in Man United’s history back to the club, he’s already made a massive impact, so I think for Ole the pressure is on, he has to go and deliver.

“I think it has to happen this year now, he’s been there a long time. He has got the squad to do it, can he install that mentality? Again, time will tell.”

After Man United’s win over Atalanta, Arsene Wenger heaped praised on Ronaldo:

“I told you before the game that Ronaldo is a champion, and we see that is never by coincidence,” Wenger said.

“He turned up again with a wonderful header. We forget many times when we speak about him how good he is in the air.”

“The changes made the difference – [Paul] Pogba, I thought, did well.

“I would personally highlight the second half for Fred.

“Fred saved a few crosses in the box, defensively outstanding and he worked unbelievably hard in the second half.”

“Pogba gave more power out from deep midfield by creating more dangerous balls.

“And when Pogba came on, [Bruno] Fernandes became better. Fernandes had a poor first half and in the second half he came alive.”

Vitesse 1-0 Tottenham: Under par Spurs beaten in Europe

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham underperformed as they were deservedly beaten in the Europa Conference League by Vitesse.

Santo made eleven changes for this game and they were beaten via Maximilian Wittek’s 78th-minute strike.

Bryan Gil hit the crossbar in the second half but this was the closest that Spurs came to scoring.

Last time played in Holland they enjoyed one of the most famous nights in their history as Lucas Moura’s hat-trick against Ajax sent them through to the Champions League final.

This time the Johan Cruijff Arena was nothing but a stop on the trainline between Amsterdam and Arnhem and that Moura miracle must seem a long time ago as Spurs now compete in the third tier of European football.

Nuno has shown the competition respect so far, but made it clear where his priorities lay, leaving the entire XI that played 90 minutes at Newcastle last weekend at home to train ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to the Hammers.

With the return fixture in a fortnight and then a trip to the weakest team in the competition NS Mura to come, the Portuguese decided that leaving his big guns back in London for this game was a risk worth taking.

It was a gamble because this was a big night for Vitesse, who sold out their GelreDome stadium for the first time in seven years.

Before kick-off their partisan fans held up a banner reading “For the city, the colours and our club: This is our night” and, fresh from a derby win over NEC Nijmegen at the weekend, they started with intent.

Nikolai Baden Frederiksen forced Pierluigi Gollini into a save with his feet after being played in in the third minute and then Jacob Rasmussen flashed a header just wide from a corner.

Unsurprisingly given the amount of changes, Spurs were not up to much in an attacking sense in the first half, with teenage striker Dane Scarlett up against it in a lone role in attack.

They immediately showed more after the break and were within inches of taking the lead in the 47th minute.

Giovani Lo Celso showed why he is becoming a key player for Argentina as he went on an enterprising dribble before laying it off for Gil, whose first-time shot rattled the crossbar.

That was as good as it got for Spurs who were pinned further and further back as the second half wore on, with Eli Dasa twice going close with efforts from distance, the second effort bringing a smart stop out of Gollini.

It was no surprise when the goal came 12 minutes from time as Wittek brilliantly volleyed home Dasa’s cross from the edge of the area to send the home crowd wild.
