Concept artist, Luke Fisher has given fans a look at some early designs of Babu Frik for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (that are both adorable and horrific). In its attempt to conclude over forty years of storytelling, the final film in the Skywalker Saga has proven to polarizing, receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics alike. However, there is one thing about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that everyone seems to love: Babu Frik.
Our heroes meet the adorable droidsmith, Babu Frik, early on in the film. After discovering Sith inscriptions on a dagger that reveal the coordinates to a Wayfinder, Poe, Rey, Finn, C3PO, and R2-D2 all travel to Kijim. The group needs to translate the inscriptions on the dagger, and C-3PO’s programming restricts the translation of Sith. Babu Frik bypasses this portion of C-3PO’s code (which also whips his memory), allowing Rey to find the Wayfinder and, eventually, Exegol, where Emperor Palpatine resides.
Babu Frik became a fan-favorite almost instantly. Despite having only a few lines of dialogue throughout the entire film, the character charmed audiences with his childlike appearance, voice, and comedic timing. Luke Fisher, a concept artist who worked with Lucasfilm on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, recently posted pictures of Babu Frik to Instagram. Some of the early designs strive towards adorable, like the one used in the final film, others, not so much.
This isn’t the first time we’ve gotten a glimpse at concept art for the character. , we saw a wide variety of cute and creepy designs. The Babu Frik we ended up seeing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker appears to be a well-thought-out hybrid of all those images, retaining a miniature stature, big hands, and large eyes. Thankfully, the artists steered clear of Babu Frik’s horrific and insect-centric predecessors. Babu Frik is easily the least threatening thing in a film jam-packed with plot holes, retcons, and new characters.
In the same way that fans embrace characters like Baby Yoda, BB-8, Ewoks, and Porgs, they have welcomed Babu Frik. The droidsmith is a gentle reminder of the innocence and joy that permeates a galaxy far, far away. Fitting so well within the universe, many have imagined backstories as well as future appearances for the character. The last we saw of him in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he and Zorii Bliss were celebrating with the Resistance after The Battle Of Exegol. That said, there’s no reason we won’t see more of Babu Frik or his species in any of the upcoming Star Wars movies or TV shows.
