Romano shuts down ‘fake’ reports of Ajax comeback for Man Utd star

Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has shut down “fake” reports linking Man Utd star Donny van de Beek with a move back to Ajax.

The midfielder came through the ranks at Ajax. He was a key figure for them for four years between 2016 and 2020.

Van de Beek won the Eredivise and the KNVB Cup during his time with the Dutch giants.

The 24-year-old signed for Man United last year for a fee that could rise to £40m with add-ons.

The Dutchman has not featured regularly for the Red Devils since his move to the Premier League.

Van de Beek only started four times in the league last term. He has also been out of the team this season as he has only played six minutes of Premier League football.

.

Romano has revealed via that talk of a move back to Ajax for Van de Beek is “fake”. Despite this, there are “huge chances” that he will depart United in January.

“Mourinho had it when we were at Chelsea. The team he would leave out on a Saturday was pretty much good enough to finish in the top six.

“If you want to be the manager of a top club you have to be able to make the ruthless decisions.

“He has to make some big decisions and he has to leave some big names out. Mourinho literally couldn’t care less.

“He knew he had a job and he protected his own job by picking a team to win a certain football match.

“If you want to work in big clubs that is what you have to do, you have to have that zero-tolerance attitude really.

“Ole comes across as a really nice guy and I can’t imagine he wants to upset many people.

“That’s fine, he can do it his way, he doesn’t have to upset people, he can deliver the message however he wants. But he has to deliver it at some point.”

Vitesse 1-0 Tottenham: Under par Spurs beaten in Europe

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham underperformed as they were deservedly beaten in the Europa Conference League by Vitesse.

Santo made eleven changes for this game and they were beaten via Maximilian Wittek’s 78th-minute strike.

Bryan Gil hit the crossbar in the second half but this was the closest that Spurs came to scoring.

Last time played in Holland they enjoyed one of the most famous nights in their history as Lucas Moura’s hat-trick against Ajax sent them through to the Champions League final.

This time the Johan Cruijff Arena was nothing but a stop on the trainline between Amsterdam and Arnhem and that Moura miracle must seem a long time ago as Spurs now compete in the third tier of European football.

Nuno has shown the competition respect so far, but made it clear where his priorities lay, leaving the entire XI that played 90 minutes at Newcastle last weekend at home to train ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to the Hammers.

With the return fixture in a fortnight and then a trip to the weakest team in the competition NS Mura to come, the Portuguese decided that leaving his big guns back in London for this game was a risk worth taking.

It was a gamble because this was a big night for Vitesse, who sold out their GelreDome stadium for the first time in seven years.

Before kick-off their partisan fans held up a banner reading “For the city, the colours and our club: This is our night” and, fresh from a derby win over NEC Nijmegen at the weekend, they started with intent.

Nikolai Baden Frederiksen forced Pierluigi Gollini into a save with his feet after being played in in the third minute and then Jacob Rasmussen flashed a header just wide from a corner.

Unsurprisingly given the amount of changes, Spurs were not up to much in an attacking sense in the first half, with teenage striker Dane Scarlett up against it in a lone role in attack.

They immediately showed more after the break and were within inches of taking the lead in the 47th minute.

Giovani Lo Celso showed why he is becoming a key player for Argentina as he went on an enterprising dribble before laying it off for Gil, whose first-time shot rattled the crossbar.

That was as good as it got for Spurs who were pinned further and further back as the second half wore on, with Eli Dasa twice going close with efforts from distance, the second effort bringing a smart stop out of Gollini.

It was no surprise when the goal came 12 minutes from time as Wittek brilliantly volleyed home Dasa’s cross from the edge of the area to send the home crowd wild.
