‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’: New Set Photo Shows Off Surprising DCEU Character

A new set photo from Shazam! Fury of the Gods has teased the return of a beloved DCEU character.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia. The sequel, which is set to expand upon the mythology of the first film, will be introducing DC Extended Universe newcomers Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as the daughters of Atlas. Those aren’t the only mythological characters in the film, however, as new set photo has confirmed that Djimon Honsou will be appearing in the DCEU sequel. Honsou first appeared in Shazam! as the titular wizard who grants Billy Batson his powers. It was unclear during the early stages of production if Honsou would reprise his role for the sequel now that Batson is a bit wiser and knows to do good deeds with his powers.

‘Shazam!: Fury Of The Gods’ Set Photo Shows New Look At Rachel Zegler’s Suit

The original DCEU film saw Djimon Honsou’s Shazam rocking long, grey locks and a beard, but his look has completely changed for the sequel. For one, the character is seen sporting dreadlocks and has a much more manageable beard in terms of length. Honsou’s wizard looks younger in the set photo, implying that he could potentially join in on the action this time around instead of just being a wisened, battle-hardened sage.

‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Promo Image Teases Grace Fulton’s Mary Marvel

Here is the official synopsis for the first Shazam! movie:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Fury of the Gods will hit theaters on June 2, 2023. Keep it locked to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content!

In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Norman Reedus doubled down on wanting to star as the literal daredevil demon for the MCU.

“The Ghost Rider conversation has been coming up for years, and yeah, tell them to put me in it. I want to play Ghost Rider.”

“I want a fire skull. I want my face to turn into a fire skull and whip a chain around. That would be great.”

Norman Reedus then continued by discussing how “fun” it would be to once again work with his former The Walking Dead co-star Jon Bernthal, who appeared as Frank Castle in Daredevil and The Punisher.

“That would be great. So, I don’t know, call somebody, make that happen. I want to do it.”
