‘Shocked to the core’: Tributes pour in for the late Karima Brown

Veteran journalist Karima Brown sadly passed away on Thursday 4 March 2021 after being diagnosed with COVID-19 a few weeks ago. Since the sad news of her death, tributes have been pouring in on social media — so much so — that the name Karima Brown has reached the top of the Twitter trends list. 

Enca, her employers, took to social media on Thursday morning saying that Karima Brown was admitted to hospital and later succumbed to the virus. 

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR KARIMA BROWN 

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said she was shocked to the core after hearing about Karima Brown’s passing. 

“Still battling to wrap my mind around the news that Karima Brown is no more. This shocked me to the core. Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues. Thank you for your fearless commitment to necessary conversations,” she said. 

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said Karima Brown’s passing was sudden and heartbreaking. 

“She was a brilliant journalist and now broadcaster. Sending my deepest condolences to her family, her friends and colleagues. South African media has lost one of its loudest voice – I’ll miss our robust engagements,” he said. 

News Anchor Redi Tlhabi sent condolences to her son and brother, as well as, friends colleagues and the journalism fraternity. 

“I’d like to send my condolences to Karima Brown’s family..especially her son and brother Zain. To her many friends and colleagues, the journalism fraternity, I am sorry for your loss. I wish you fortitude and courage as you deal with this blow.” 

UDM President Bantu Holomisa said he was saddened to hear that senior journalist and political commentator Karima Brown had passed away.

“It was interesting to listen to her analyses; even when we disagreed with her. Our condolences to her loved ones. May her soul rest in peace,” he said. 

FAMILY RELEASES A STATEMENT 

On Thursday, the family of Karima Brown released an official statement saying that she passed earlier in the morning due to COVID-19 related complications. 

“Karima was not just a prolific and well-known South African journalist and commentator, with deep footprints in print and broadcast media, but also and more importantly a well-loved friend, mentor, mother, colleague, daughter, and confidante to countless people throughout a life lived fully, and with deep commitment to her most cherished values and principles,” the statement read. 

“We are enormously proud of the fierce determination she had shown, since her early years, to get involved in bringing about a more just, inclusive, and anti-racist South Africa. This determination also shaped her fearless approach to journalism. She was driven by a conviction that journalism must be in service of justice,” it added. 

Karima Brown will be laid to rest in a burial ceremony which will be held in accordance with Islamic rites and traditions. In due course, an announcement will be made about a more public memorial service in honour of her life.
