A spectator has been killed and two others have been injured after a vehicle hit a group of bystanders during the Finke Desert Race in the Northern Territory.

A spectator has been killed and two others have been injured after a vehicle hit a group of bystanders during the Finke Desert Race in the Northern Territory.

NT Police confirmed a man in his 60s died approximately 35 kilometres from the race's start and finish line after a vehicle struck a group of onlookers.

Another spectator, a man in his 50s, was seriously injured and has been flown to Alice Springs hospital for treatment.

The navigator of the vehicle, a woman aged in her 50s, also received minor injuries.

Organisers of the race confirmed on social media that NT Police were investigating the incident and cancelled both the race's presentation night and the return leg for the bike competitors.

Police are urging spectators who saw the crash, or who may have video footage of the incident, to contact authorities immediately.

The area has been cordoned off and competitors have been diverted from the area, which has been declared a crime scene.

Motorsport Australia has indicated it will also be conducting its own investigation into the incident.

"Together with event organisers, Motorsport Australia will begin its own investigation into the incident and will of course assist all relevant authorities with their respective investigations," Motorsport Australia said in a statement.

"Motorsport Australia is also providing ongoing support and assistance to all competitors, officials and those associated with the event, which includes providing counselling services."

The Finke Desert Race is an annual off-road motorsport race held in Central Australia that sees competitors race across the desert in a number of different categories including motorbikes, cars, buggies and quads.
